The Original Position
The Social Contract: a moral and political idea that there is an “agreement” of
social power. We all surrender power to the government in exchange for
protections.
The Veil of Ignorance: John Rawls’ thought experiment to guide those in a
social contract to make the right and moral choices.
Children in Poverty in USA

Our class requirements
As a class we will perform three
projects
The first project will be to
map our communities and the
resources they have.
The second project will be
on preparing the CMC student body
for natural disasters
The last one will be
designed and developed by you
based on the Service Project Cycle
Your responsibility
Individually we will volunteer 20 hours over the course of the term serving our
community.
Any out of school hours spent on the class projects will count for these
hours
Only ¼ (or 5 hours) may be used on simple project such as picking up
trash, filing, helping teachers, etc.
Important: your class grade is linked to your hours!

How to find opportunities
Hands on Greater Portland - A major hub linking volunteers to opportunities in
the greater Portland metro area.
Volunteer Match - Customizable to your area code
Craigslist - Less reliable and some sketchy things on here. Be sure to check
with me before going.
Search “Portland/Clackamas Volunteer Opportunities” in Google and see what
you find! Consider time commitments, transportation, etc.
