Gambling in Ohio
My Ohio Now
• My Ohio Now  goal was to bring a topnotch casino to Ohio
• State Issue 6  if passed, would authorize the
building of the first casino in the state
• Proposed casino  to be built be Lakes
Entertainment
Support
• Yes on 6 (Lakes Entertainment)
- revenue
- jobs
- Ohioans would stay at home to
gamble
Opposition
• No on 6 (sponsored by Penn National Gaming)
• Vote no Casinos – opposes gambling on
economic and moral grounds
• UNITE Here – concerned about the casino
becoming “non-union”
Governor Ted Strickland
• Democratic Governor of Ohio since 2007
- Labeled gambling “an insidious condition
that can ruin lives”
- “I don’t think it would be accurate to sell this
as an answer to Ohio’s economic challenges. …
I really don’t envision anything that is likely to
change my mind.”
Not Successful
Why?
- 36 million dollars were spent in opposition to
State Issue 6 (majority by Penn Nat’l Gaming)
- Public sentiment – previous movements for
the building of casinos were stricken down
(1990, 1996, 2006)
