The purpose of Standards Based Grading is to communicate with
students and parents about the achievement of specific learning goals.
It identifies students’ levels of progress with regard to those goals,
areas of strength, and areas where additional time and effort are
needed.
Assessment scores will be weighted and placed into one of two
categories that will be explicitly told to the students prior to
assessments; “Essential Standards” and “Supporting Standards”.
“Essential Standards” and “Supporting Standards” have been
determined based on the requirements of the level of the course
For each “Essential Standard” the scores on assessments will increase
as the semester progresses to ensure retention of these key skills.
Grades on these “Essential Standards” will average over the course of
the semester. For this reason, retakes on standards are not offered in
between assessments. This “in between” time is for students to
remediate understanding and teachers to intervene so that students
will do better on the next assessment.
“Supporting Standards” will be averaged over the course of the
semester.
