What to do BEFORE the course starts
WHAT IS NURS 480?
Clinical capstone course that requires 135 clinical hours
You will plan, implement and evaluate your own senior project
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE COURSE STARTS
Planning, coordinating, and implementing your project is how you will get the vast
majority of your hours. I will send a separate email with some presentations from
previous students (with their permission) so that you can get a sense of some previous
projects.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE COURSE STARTS
You will need to come up with your own senior project idea and implementation
site. Please look over the Senior Project Designs Document to get see the different
project designs from which you can choose. I recommend that you have a project idea
and go ahead and get a tentative agreement from the site you want to do your
project BEFORE the course starts. Some facilities have a clearance process that
students must complete before they can start. Also, if a clinical contract is required by
the agency it takes several weeks for FSU Legal to approve clinical contracts!
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE COURSE STARTS
You must have an unencumbered, active RN license, current AHA CPR, and your own
professional liability malpractice insurance for the RN (NOT the student). You
cannot use the malpractice insurance from your employer even if you complete
your project at your place of employment. You must purchase your own policy.
There are several companies that offer this coverage. You may choose any company
at any amount as long as it is for the RN. You will be required to submit this
documentation the first week of class. DO NOT SEND IT NOW!
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE COURSE STARTS
You need to be available to complete a conference (in person or via phone) with
the instructor the first week of class. This conference is for you to pitch your project
idea and get it approved so that you can start clinical. You cannot start your project
without the approval of the instructor during this conference. I will do my best to
accommodate students’ schedules, but keep your schedule free the first week of class
so that you can complete this mandatory task. I will not schedule appointments before
the course starts!

starts, not before.
