Sewing
Tracing patterns on fabric

Put enough pressure on the tracing wheel
to transfer the pattern markings onto the
fabric
Pins vs. Needles

Pins hold fabric and needles bring thread
through fabric
Thread Guides

The purpose of a thread guide on a
sewing machine is to keep the thread from
tangling
Feed dog

Two small rows of metal teeth on a
sewing machine that advance (move) the
fabric evenly
Tape Measure

Used to measure arm length, inseam, etc.
on a person to tailor a pattern to that
person
Thread Shank
The thread shank is created when the
thread is wound around several times
under a button
 Allows for room
when the button
is closed

Cutting Line

The solid line on a pattern piece which
you cut along to cut out the fabric
Notches

Diamond shapes on the cutting line on a
pattern piece that you have to cut around
so you can match up pieces of the
garment
Pattern Guide Sheet
Read the pattern user guide (sheet) to determine the sewing patterns' layout
on the fabric. It also explains placement of the pattern pieces of the fabric.

Sewing Machine Needle




A thimble is used when hand sewing

The First step to hemming a garment, is
to mark where the new hem should be
