Engineering Production Challenges
Earlier this year in response to concerns about
Controls readiness for installation, engineering
teams were formed to address design, integration
and production issues
Some specific concerns…
Lagging procurement, indicating slow progress in a
number of areas, threatening injector commissioning
Some activities such as cable plant design were as
much as 6 months behind the schedule

Control System Integration
Some specific concerns…
While we are generally successful in designing a
system, difficulties were experienced in the production
stages leading to the field installation
Lack of sufficient technical expertise in a number of
areas, particularly in electronics hardware engineering
Lack of sufficient personnel to complete the product
lifecycle particularly in the areas of coordination, design,
documents, fabrication and installation
Integration issues, both within controls as well as with
other LCLS systems

LCLS Engineering Teams
The goals for the Engineering Teams were:
Multi-disciplinary teams to managing the full product
lifecycle from specification and design to engineering
development, production, installation and commissioning
To ensure communication among all disciplines, and that
all interface issues are addressed
Each team has representatives from Controls,
CPE, Mechanical Systems, Physics, CF, etc.
There will be an integrated project meeting for
each subsystem with all the relevant disciplines
represented

LCLS Controls Engineering Teams
Team activities have included:
Developing a schedule covering all phases leading to
installation and commissioning
Production of appropriate documents (ESD, ICD, etc.)
and design reviews
Interfacing with Mario Ortega, Mike DiSalvo and Bob
Fuller to coordinate procurement
Interfacing with various shops to complete the back-end
of the project leading to field installation

Engineering Teams – Progress Report
The engineering team approach has been a success in addressing the
issues that prevented us from proceeding from design to successful
installation
Successes…
More awareness of the production issues such as design documents, wiring
diagrams, fabrication, shop orders, etc.
Production issues are increasingly handled within teams
Opportunities…
Interface issues – “Controls” is every where, however the teams are not
always included in system discussions in other departments
Insufficient number of coordinators, designers, electricians, etc. to serve all
the teams
The production “shops” are over loaded
Not all the teams are self-sufficient enough to complete their systems
independently.

Summary – The integration of LCLS Controls
with SLAC has been a success
Our “production” issues have been addressed and
to some extent solve, but opportunities exist
We are in a much better position to proceed with
the rest of the project, linac, undulator, etc.
Controls integration has been vital in completing
our projects
We need to “staff up” in key production areas to
have a smoother installation phase in the future
