Autoclave Safety
• Autoclave hazards range from
physical hazards, such as heat,
steam and pressure, to biological
hazards, such as improperly
autoclaved infectious material.
• Individual labs must train new
users on the safe usage of
autoclaves.
• Before use:
– Check that autoclave is clear of any items left
from previous use.
– Check that door gaskets have not deteriorated
• Loading
– Load as per manufacturers instructions.
– Make sure door is properly closed and latched.
• Unloading
– Wear proper PPE!
– Open the door slowly while keeping head, face
and hands away from the opening.
