Literacy Night

Rainbow Write
 Rainbow write allows kids to practice writing and
saying their words.
 Have your student pick three colored markers
(crayons, pens, etc. will also work just fine).
 Using all three colors, your student practices
spelling their words.
 ***The only rule to rainbow write is that you MUST
write the ENTIRE word before pick up the next
color.
Cross Body Movement
 Cross-lateral movements are those in
which arms and legs cross over from one
side of the body to the other. The left side
of the brain controls the right side of the
body, and the right side of the brain
controls the left side. Both sides are
forced to communicate when arms and
legs cross over. This “unsticks” the brain,
energizes learning and improves memory.
Cross Body Exercises
 Have student dribble basketball from right
hand to left hand crossing the center line of
their body. With each bounce students spell a
letter to a given spelling word until the whole
word is spelled.
 Have student throw a ball across center line to
another person as they spell their words.
 Have students take 2 scarves and alternate
throwing them up and across their body and
catch it with their other hand as they spell
their words.
Prove It!
When you prove it, you find the
“rule” in your everyday reading.
Students know what rule they are
looking for and they begin to
recognize and apply the “rule” while
they are reading.
Have the student make a list of the
words they find each week.
