The Sandtrap

Purpose
– To Lift a 1kg mass 1m in 10 sec

Overview
– The device is built to be as
inefficient as possible
To start with, we release a .25kg mass that rolls down a ramp and hits another
.25kg mass attached to a stopper that releases .5kg of that fills into a bucket
already filled with multiple masses that is equal to 2.5kg. When filled the bucket
has a total mass of 3kg. That is attached to a pulley system that then spins around
a central shaft that essentially winches the 1kg mass up to approx. a height of 1m.
ENERGY!!
For our first device we calculated the
Gravitational potential energy to be .623J.
 The second object was found to have PEG of
.374J.
 Also for our final object, the bucket, we had a
PEG of -3.11J since our Datum was set at the
bottom of our device and not the floor

Construction!


In designing our project we met once to
design and brainstorm in Hodges Library
We then held regular build sessions
throughout the project build time span
– During these build sessions we had to
sometimes brainstorm on the fly and
come up with quick fixes, not always
sticking to the plans.

Finally we met the day before the due
date to test and finalize our design
Conclusion
In all we found that our device, while
complex, does complete required task but
does not always take exactly ten seconds
 In all the total cost was $18.63
 Also the total build time including the
design process took a total of 10 hours.
