USING APA FORMAT
All margins are set to one inch.
The Body
All lines are double-spaced.
There are no extra spaces between sections or
subheadings in the main text.
There are no extra spaces between paragraphs
in the main text.

The Heading
The heading style recommended by APA consists of five
possible formatting arrangements, according to the number of
levels of subordination. Each level is numbered.

The Title Page
The title page includes the following:
Manuscript Header
Running Head
Full Title
Byline (Author)
Institutional Affiliation
The Heading
The manuscript header appears half an inch
from the top on the right corner of every
page, including the title page. It contains
one or two words from the title followed by
the page number.
The running head appears flush left at
the top of the title page below the
manuscript page header.
Begin with “Running head:” and include
an abbreviated title in all capital letters
no more than 50 characters including
spaces and punctuation.
The Title
Position the title in the upper half of the
page.
No more than 12 words.
If the title is more than one line,
remember to double-space.
Do not type the title in all capital letters.
The title should be centered between the
right and left margins.
Remember to center the title, byline,
and institutional affiliation.
The institutional affiliation is usually the
location where the author conducted the
study. In most cases, the author’s school
is the institutional affiliation.

The Abstract
The second page of any paper written in
APA format is the abstract.
The abstract is a concise summary of the
paper in a single block paragraph.
The word limit varies from journal to journal,
but the average is 150 to 250 words.
Center “Abstract” at the top of the page.
Then begin the summary on the following
line. Do not indent the paragraph.
The main text begins on the following page
(page three).
Center the title at the top and begin the
text on the following line.

The Reference Page
A reference page begins on a separate
page after the main text ends.
Center “References” at the top of the
page. Then begin the entries on the
following line.
Any other pages (Appendix, Author Note,
Footnotes, Tables, Figure Captions, and
Figures) should begin on their own
separate pages. Just remember to center
the subheading at the top.
Remember to include the header with the
page number on all the pages.
Remember that
some professors
may modify these guidelines to
fit their own classes and
assignments.
