TENER in the Present tense
The verb TENER is irregular in the Present tense. The
verb endings are the same as other –ER verbs, but it has
a stem change in all the singular forms and in the “they /
Uds” form.
TENER – to have
Tengo
tienes
tiene
tenemos
tenéis
tienen
Verbs with a stem change in these persons are sometimes
called “shoe verbs” because if you draw a line around
the changes, it looks somewhat like a shoe.
tengo
tienes
tiene
tenemos
tenéis
tienen
The verb TENER is also used to ask/tell ages. In Spanish when
asking someone’s age, you don’t ask, “How old are you?” You
ask “How many years do you have?”
¿Cuántos años tienes?
When you tell how old you are, you say “I have ____ years.”
Tengo ____ años.
How old is Raúl?
¿Cuántos años tiene Raúl?
He is fifteen years old.
Tiene quince años.
How old are Luisa and Ana?
¿Cuantos años tienen Luisa y Ana?
They are sixteen years old.
Tienen dieciséis años.
