Part One…………Grace
• You must know the
various symbols and
statements on the
product you will buy.
When exposed to the
sunshine
Suns Rays
• The sun gives off various different
levels of radiation and they are
categorized into three main groups:
UVC, UVB and UVA Radiation.
UVC
• The UVC rays have the shortest
wavelength, they do not bother the
skin at all as it is all soaked up into
the ozone layer.
UVB
• This type of radiation does affect the
skin and its main target is the
epidermis, or the outer layers.
• This is the main radiation which
causes sunburn and it is usually at
its strongest between 10.00 am and
2.00pm.
UVA
• UVA radiation is a main contributor
to skin cancer. It goes deeper into
the skin than USB radiation and it
often is more constant throughout
the year.
What is SPF?
• SPF (sun protection factor) ratings
measure a product's ability to block
UVB rays.
• A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 filters
92% of the UVB.
• a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will
delay the onset of a sunburn in a
person who would otherwise burn in
10 minutes to burn in 150 minutes.
When you're outdoors to
help manage sun exposure:
• Wear sunscreen with a sun
protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
• Choose a sunscreen that blocks both
UVA and UVB rays.
• The sun's rays are strongest between
10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, so reapply
sunscreen frequently and take
breaks indoors if you can.
