Britton Chance (born July 24, 1913) is Eldridge Reeves Johnson University
Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Biophysics, at the University of
Pennsylvania. He received a Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry 1940 at
the University of Pennsylvania. In 1952 he received his D.Sc. from
His research interests focus on the use of light
to characterize the properties of various tissues and
breast tumors. He joined the United States National Academy of
Cambridge.
Sciences in 1952. Chance received the National Medal of Science in 1974.
He was also previously elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish
Academy of Sciences, Medical Sciences, in 1968, as well as a Foreign
Member of the Royal Society (London) in 1981.

Abstract
Using the hamster cheek pouch carcinogenesis model, we explore which
fluorescence excitation wavelengths are useful for the detection of
neoplasia. 42 hamsters were treated with DMBA to induce carcinogenesis,
and 20 control animals were treated only with mineral oil. Fluorescence
excitation emission matrices were measured from the cheek pouches of the
hamsters weekly. Results showed increased fluorescence near 350-370 nm
and 410 nm excitation and decreased fluorescence near 450-470 nm
excitation with neoplasia. The
optimal diagnostic excitation
wavelengths identified using this model - 350-370 nm
excitation and 400-450 nm excitation - are similar to those
identified for detection of human oral cavity neoplasia.
The Construction
• The electronic engineering design consists
of 450 nm and 370 nm LEDs flashed
alternatively for 10msec. Attached thereto
at a distance of 3 mm but protected by
gelatin filters, respectively at 520 nm and
450 nm, are two Si diode detectors
followed by current to voltage conversion.
The sheep, under appropriate animal subject protocol,
was anesthetized with breathing isofluorane [to avoid a
change of mitochondrial steady state as with Nembutal]
and anesthesia was ensured by standard tests. From
minutes 0 to 10 the device was moved in the cavity to
find a stable location. At minute 14 the inspired gas
was changed to N2 an the redos value in creased from
0.76 to 0.94 with very good signal to noise ratio.
