Introduction
On-going concern on the role of tea export
earnings in food security, particularly how they
impact smallholders.
 Smallholder tea production issues and
constraints.
 Remedial recommendations:

◦ Economic: Tea production and productivity; export
and imports of tea, national income from tea;
◦ Social: Rural population, rural poverty, rural
employment, food security, sanitation and water
◦ Environmental: Agriculture and water use and
availability.

Next steps…
Work with four/five focus countries to collect
data for the Socio-economic statistical
framework for small-holder tea producers.
 Analyse the data with the countries to better
understand the ways small holders can be
assisted.
 Implement Socio-economic statistical/analysis
frameworks in countries with regular
updating, monitoring and analysis.
