Surface Science Group
Koel Research Group specializes in surface science
Research:
• Characterize surfaces
• Understand fundamental chemical interactions at a surface
• Heterogeneous Catalysis
• Photocatalysts for solar cells
• Plasma-facing components
PPPL primary goal: “developing the scientific understanding
and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy
source for the world.”
Auger spectroscopy
Basic parts:
• Electron gun
• Electron detector
• Analyzer
Typically use electrons in 50 eV to 3 keV range
Works via core-valence-valence transition
Surface sensitive (escape depth of electrons is a few
nanometers).
Used for detecting atoms on the surface of a material.
