Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT)
• Pioneered by Gregor Novak, Andrew Gavrin & Evelyn Patterson
Goals
• Promote active learning in the classroom
• Structure out-of-class time
• Enhance student-instructor & student-student interaction
Web-based activities
• Warm-up exercises, puzzles (preparation)
• Enrichment pages (motivation)
• Instructional material (information)
“Minimal” Implementation
Goals
• Encourage students to read before lectures
• Get them to reflect on key ideas
• Collect “just-in-time” information on student difficulties
Physics 2A & 2B
•
∼100 students; large-lecture format; 4 instructors
• Weekly pre-lecture reading assignments / questions
• 5% of module grade for participation* in
– online Moodle questions
– in-class clicker questions
(*graded for effort, not correctness)
