• Irony is when the expectation
and the reality do not match
each other. To be a true irony,
they should be opposites of
each other.

• The fire station burns to the ground.
• A senator who champions family values is
caught cheating on his wife.
• The most shy kid in class turns out to be a
fabulous actor.
examples
• Situational irony – the outcome of events is the
opposite of what we expect.
• Verbal irony – what someone says is the
opposite of what he or she means.
• Dramatic irony – we (the reader or audience)
know more than the characters in the work do.
