Bibliography
in MLA format
What is an annotated bibliography?
•
“Bibliography”
a list of sources one has used for researching a topic
•
“Annotation”
a note of explanation or comment added to a text or diagram
•
“Annotated bibliography”
a list of sources that also includes explanations and/or comments
What is included in an annotated
bibliography?
•
Annotated bibliographies often include:
A brief summary of the source (or the part of the source that is relevant to
your assignment)
An assessment or evaluation of the source
A description of how you plan to use the source for your assignment
Why do an annotated bibliography?
•
Great preparation for the argumentative essay!
When you write annotations for your sources, you’re forced to read
them more closely.
You begin to read critically, not just collect information.
It helps you to weed through the plethora of available materials
that relate to your topic.
Every source you include in your annotated bibliography will have a purpose in
your essay—and you’ll already know what that purpose is.
It can help you to see all the sides of your issue, and make sure that you’re
selecting articles that provide different perspectives.
It makes writing your outline easier.
Annotated bibliography assignment
•
Your annotated bibliography will include at least four sources
Three that support your view on the topic and one that supports an
opposing viewpoint

Plan for using the source in your essay (1-2 sentences)
MLA format
•
Your annotated bibliography should be in MLA format, just as your final
essay will be.
•
MLA header (last name and page number at the top right)
MLA heading (your name, teacher’s name, class, date—all double-spaced)
