Imperfect of SER, VER and IR
Before we go on, you should have a good
understanding of the uses of the Imperfect. If
you don’t, go back and review.
You should know the imperfect IS NOT A
SUBSTITUTE for the preterite.
In general...





The imperfect refers to repeated/habitual
actions in the past
The imperfect sets the stage upon which
other actions take place
Use the imperfect to express time in the
past
Use the imperfect to report what was said
in the present (hear say)
The imperfect describes characteristics or
physical conditions
There are just three irregular verbs in the
imperfect. You can apply the rules you
have learned to Ser, Ver and Ir as well.

Remember - The imperfect
is used to talk about things
in the past. It is used to
describe habitual or
customary actions. It is
also used to tell time or
express age. Stick with
these rules and you will
master the imperfect!
