Wind Powered Hydrogen Production
Team Members: Amy Miller and John Pagliaro
Advisor: Dr. Uri Vandsburger
The goal of this project is to produce and store hydrogen using
electricity generated by a wind turbine. Hydrogen fuel is an
alternative to fossil fuels, but its not currently produced by clean
methods. This project will produce hydrogen using an
electrolysis unit, then compress it through the use of an
electrochemical compressor. All systems are designed and built
in-house by the 12 students on the Mechanical Engineering
team. Amy and John are working with two other ME students to
develop the electrochemical compressor and storage unit.
Key Features:
•Wind turbine to generate electricity
•Electrolysis unit to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen
•Electrochemical compressor to compress hydrogen
•Storage tank to hold hydrogen for later use
•Fully functional demonstration unit to be built in Blacksburg
