3 Point Turns (pg.126-127)
Also know as K-Turns, or Broken
U-Turns
3 point turn is one of the hardest
turnabouts for a new driver.

Executing the Turn
Stop as close to the right edge of
the curb as possible.
• Check for traffic in both directions
• Wait until you have a 20-30 second gap
Signal a left turn.
• Mirror, Mirror, Blind Spot

Turn the steering wheel all the way to the
left.
Turn the car perpendicular to the opposite
curb and come to a complete stop.
Put the car in reverse.
Check traffic to the left as you turn the
wheel all the way to the right.

Check traffic to the right.
Turn and look over your right shoulder
out the rear windshield.
Stop the car about 3 ft away from the
curb. Observe over your shoulder until
the car comes to a complete stop.

Put the car in Drive and slowly roll out
turning the steering wheel to the left
until the tires are straight, and the car
is pointed in the opposite direction from
which you started.
Slowly accelerate to join the flow of
traffic

When you locate an empty space,
approach in the lane next to the
space.
• Approach the vehicle in front of the space
you intend to parallel park in.

• Signal 3-4 seconds in advance if possible
• Pull the car up about 3 feet away next the
car in front of the desired space.
• Your passenger mirror to the other
vehicles driver side view mirror.

Perform a safety sweep.
Slowly release a little pressure off
of the break pedal as you turn the
steering wheel sharply to the right.

When the car reaches a 45º angle straighten the
tires by turning the steering wheel 1 ½ times to the
left.
When your front bumper lines up with the rear
bumper of the other vehicle turn sharply left.
When the car is parallel to the curb straighten the
tires.
If necessary put the car into Drive and center your
vehicle between the 2 vehicles.

Acceleration – Increase in speed.
Deceleration – Decrease in speed.
Your ability to drive safely and effectively
depends in large part on your knowledge of
your vehicle’s acceleration.

Several factors affect a vehicle’s acceleration.
Power of the Engine
The transmission and differential gear ratios
Adhesion between the drive wheels and the
road surface.
The weight the engine is pulling.

The amount of time it takes to
accelerate from one speed to
another is the rate of
acceleration.
The time it takes to decelerate
from one speed to another is the
rate of deceleration.

Rate of acceleration varies with speed
At higher speeds the rate of acceleration is lower
than at lower speeds
It generally takes longer to accelerate from 45mph
to 55mph than from 20mph to 30mph.
You must allow for more time to pass another vehicle
at 50 mph than at 30 mph because it will take you
longer to accelerate.

Deceleration rates equally vary with speed.
A vehicle traveling at 60 needs more time
and space to slow and brake to a stop than
the same vehicle traveling at 30mph.
