Step 1: Pin Number



Apply for a student Pin Number
Have your parents apply for a Pin Number.
Go to: fafsa.ed.gov
A pin number is needed to electronically sign
when you submit your FAFSA.
Step 2: Gather Materials




Social Security Number
Driver’s License
Most recent Federal Income Tax Return
Your parent’s most recent Federal Income
Tax Return


Previous year’s tax information may be used and adjusted later, if needed
Your Current Bank Statements
Step 3: Fill out FAFSA worksheet
Step 4: File FAFSA Online



File electronically – the sooner, the better

The online process will take about an hour if you
fill out the worksheet first.
Your SAR (Student Aid Report)



After you complete your FAFSA you will
receive your SAR.
Check it carefully and make any corrections
that may be needed.
Results will provide the “Expected Family
Contribution” which will be used to
calculate “Financial Need.”
Your Financial Aid



Colleges you have listed and that you have
been admitted to will send you an award
letter including the types and amounts of
financial aid.
Review and compare your award letters.
Contact the financial aid office if you do not
understand what they are offering you.

Fill out the FAFSA application each year.
Fill out the application ASAP – the sooner
the better.
Fill out the application even if you think
your family won’t qualify.
