Brave New World Chapters 6-11
Significant Developments
• Individuality and solitude are taboo in the World
State (see Bernard and Lenina’s “date” on p. 8893)
• Bernard and Lenina visit the “Savage
Reservation.” What is this? Who lives there?
What do Bernard and Lenina’s reactions to this
place tell us about the World State?
• This section introduces us to John (The Savage)
and Linda (his mother). What perspectives on
the contrast between the Reservation and the
World State do these characters offer?
Significant Developments
• Chapter 10 sees the fruition of Bernard’s plan to
discredit the Director (who, we find out, is John’s
father).
• Chapter 11 begins John’s true introduction to the
“civilized” world he has only heard about from his
mother. Again, the “outsider’s” perspective that
John has on the World State is significant here.
– John visits a factory and a school on p. 159-164.
– John and Lenina go to the “feelies” (p. 166-171)
– Why is John so horrified/disgusted by the factory and
the feelie? Are we meant to share it? Why?
