It is important to talk to your teen about
these issues so you know they are
getting the right information.

Tips for talking to your teen about tough issues




Make sure you research and get the facts you need
so you can answer appropriately the questions your
child may have.
If you don’t know the answer…Work with your child
to find the answer …search the internet, ask your
doctor or pastor, and even school counselors.
Make sure you explain your own values…and be a
good example.

Don’t do all the talking… listen to your child and give
them opportunities to ask questions and voice their
concerns.

Try to be honest

Be patient


Use everyday opportunities to talk… like something
you see on a t.v. show or the news.
Talk often… don’t just think one talk will do the trick.

tough so try one of these icebreakers:

Have any of your teachers ever talked to you
about drugs and alcohol?
Do you know any kids at your school who use
drugs or alcohol?

Set a good example for you children.
If you drink be prepared to explain the differences
of adults drinking responsibly and abusing alcohol.
Make sure you know who their friends are and get
to know their parents as well.
Call and make sure parents or a chaperone will be
home when your child spends the night out.
Or encourage you child to have his/her friends
over to your house where you know they will be
safe.

What about Dating…

First of all sit down with your spouse and make
sure you come up with a set of rules you both
agree upon before you talk with your child.
Discuss things like:




Age your child can start dating
Where they can go and what they can do
Curfews
And any other issues guidelines you think are necessary

Next talk with your child…





Make sure state the rules clearly and ask you child if they
have any questions.
Talk about what kind of behavior is appropriate to engage in
on a date.
Stress the importance of safety, and what to do if they are
put in an uncomfortable situation.
Make sure you stick to your rules and inform your child of
the consequences if they break the rules.
And most importantly let your child know that you made the
rules because you love them and you want what is best for
them.
