Why They Are So Good

• having an early priority date on an idea is
just like having a great location in real
estate.
• Provisional patents cost a lot less than
normal patent application.

Drawbacks
Delay
Double
Trouble
More
Complicated
• you get in line to be processed when you file your non-provisional.
• Starting with a provisional can delay the registration for up to a year.
• Be careful about the deadline for filing non-provisional application.
• If you don't prepare ahead of time, you could be late to file.
• By adding a step in the process for your patent application you make
the "file history" more complicated.

Common Mistakes
 pay close attention to your one year deadline.
 Don't just file your notes.
 Be sure to properly describe your invention.
 you can ruin your provisional patent by adding somebody
as an inventor and they are not actually an inventor.
