Romulus and Remus
According to the Roman author Livy.
The twins left to found their own
city along the Tiber river where
there were seven hills.
They could not agree on the exact
location - Romulus wanted the
Palatine Hill and Remus preferred
the Aventine Hill.
They decided to seek the advice of
the gods through augury.
augury - where a priest
would divine the will of the
gods by studying the flights
of birds.
Each brother took position on their
hill . . .
Remus saw 6
auspicious
birds.
Romulus saw
12 auspicious
birds.
Romulus claims the win and begins
to build his city.
Remus belittles and makes fun of
Romulus' new wall.
In final insult to the founder and the
new city, he jumps over the wall.
Romulus killed him, saying
"Everyone so perish that shall
hereafter jump over my wall.”
