Fire Alarm Evacuation

Purpose
Purdue ALERT Beacon & Desktop Popup Alert
(Purdue ALERT notification layers) are
activated due to a safety threat on campus.
Beacon Operation
The beacon will:
Be
activated when an incident occurs on or near the
Purdue WL campus that may impact one’s safety.
Alarm
Flash
for 10 seconds (cannot be muted)
for approximately 5 minutes
Provide
incident information (Info available for 5
minutes before it resets)
Desktop Popup Alert Operation
The Popup Alert will:
Be
activated when an incident occurs on or near the
Purdue WL campus that may impact one’s safety.
“Take
over” a Purdue logged in computer and display
an alert message (most classroom & some lab
computers).
By clicking the “enter” key, one can acknowledge
receipt (PC) or dismiss (MAC) and return to the normal
screen.
Actions
Immediately evaluate your situational
awareness.
What
is occurring on campus?
Am I in the threat area?
What actions should I take for my safety or those
I’m responsible for?
Do I need to notify others of the incident?
Class,
co-workers, others?
Actions (cont.)
Implement actions based on the incident. Considerations:
Continue seeking additional information.
Avoid the incident area.
If you “see something, say something.”
Call 911 for all emergencies.
Suspend class where appropriate or cancel class (based on
incident’s location and type).
Consider the following actions based on situational awareness:
Get out (evacuate).
Hide in a safe, securable area (shelter)…lock or secure your doors, if
possible.
Take action (fight back)…only as an absolute last resort.
Fire Alarm Evacuation
If a fire alarm is activated, immediately:
Suspend
class.
Evacuate
Proceed
the building.
outdoors, and away from the building.
Do not use the elevator
