Perfect Search
• Is search with Google perfect now?
– Query interface is limited
– Coming up with the right keywords is hard
– Hidden Web
– Search is one-shot (we will talk about it later)
Search using Small Devices
• Small screens
• UPC code scanning and comparison shopping
• RFIDs
ClickStreams
• An individual’s clickstream
– Profile, personalization
• A community’s clickstream
• Author’s comment: search engines that leverage
clickstreams will be way better than search
engines that use link-analysis only
One-Shot Search Vs. Search Assistant
• Personalization
• Search as multi-step exploratory task
Syntactic Vs. Semantic Web
• What are the things needed to make the current
Web semantic?
– Language  RDF
– Taxonomy  standard terminology for objects and
relationships
– Search engine + Reasoning engine (need other
things like verification service)
• How hard is it to transform the current Web to
the semantic Web
– How to develop the taxonomy (top-down Vs. bottom
up)?
– Effort required from “many”
Search Interface
• Keywords-based Vs. Structured query language
– Grand Canyon in between!
• Domain-specific search
– Ex: Globalspec
– Blogs?
– Is that the way to go? (One unified search engine Vs.
many domain-specific search engines)
• IBM’s WebFountain
– Tagging documents aggressively + Help with query spec.
– Will it scale? (Recall Hubs Vs. Authorities Vs. PageRank)
