Healthy Campus Initiatives
Brief History
• Presented to Faculty Senate in January 2011
• Announcement Smoke Free OSU - Feb. 2011
• In Jan. 2011 there were 466 smoke/tobacco free U.S.
colleges and universities
• Currently, 1130 (766 are tobacco free)
• ALL public higher ed institutions in Oklahoma and Arkansas
• All private and public higher ed institutions in Iowa

County and Statewide policies
• As of January 1st, there’s no more smoking, chewing
or dipping allowed on any Benton County property,
indoors or out.
• Both Multnomah and Deschutes have passed similar
bans. Corvallis prohibited smoking in city parks
several years ago.
• As of January 1st, smoking and other tobacco use will
be barred at most state buildings and grounds,
including prisons, under an executive order from
Governor Kitzhaber

• United States – 19% (West 15%, Midwest, 22%)
• State of Oregon – 15%
• Benton County – 11%
• Oregon State – Corvallis Campus
• Students: 3.7 % (nationally 4.5%) National College Health

• Over 50 calls/complaints during Fall Term
• 17 complaints received by Public Safety
• 1 student referred to Student Conduct

• International Living and Learning Center – 16th and
Western
• Along NW Monroe Avenue; 14th to 23rd streets

Addressing Impacts
• Met with local businesses on Monroe Avenue
• Convening group within the ILLC to provide
ongoing orientation and communication about
policy; also creating additional social
opportunities
• Increased signage on benches and bus stop
shelters
• Increased trash pick-up schedule

Continuing Improvements
• Permanent signage at campus entrances
• Ongoing communications with new
students, visitors and community
members
• Continued conversation with impacted
groups and individuals on and off campus
to identify solutions

• Work with OSU Cascades Campus
• Convene group (UHDS, IP, DPS, CO, BC) to
address issues and problem-solve solutions
• Sustain communications
• Continued evaluation data points
• ALA grant for “non-daily” smoking prevention
