A 12-Step Model for Domestic Violence Latina Survivors to be utilized in Community Centers How to Start DV-Anon? Vision and Mission • Healing, empowerment, education and prevention of domestic violence • Strengthening Hispanic women’s safety and self-esteem in order to promote healthier families. • Provide lifelong support for Hispanic victims of domestic violence in order to prevent revictimization. Who Can Start the Meetings? • Victims of domestic violence who are in recovery themselves can start a meeting. • Need to have more than 4 members to support the efforts and agree to come to the new meeting. • Hispanic background, speaks Spanish and is not in a domestic violence relationship. How to Outreach for Locations • Find a location: – Outreach to churches, local justice centers, state buildings, clubhouses, hospitals and buildings near police stations. • Talk to your nearest Police Station and let them know about the program to ensure members’ safety. Safety Concerns • To help ensure group members safety, there will be open and closed groups. • Closed groups: people who are interested in leaving the relationship and are in danger. • Open groups: people who are not in imminent danger, whose lives are not at risk if they attend group. • Safe if: partner is out of state, country or is locked up. Safety Concerns • If a perpetrator comes to DV-Anon. Talk before hand with the closest Police station. • Pamphlets: should be provided with legal resources, shelters, crisis hotlines and maps of the nearest police department in the area. • Each group will have to create their own resources for the local community. Choose your Meeting Type • O- Open meeting, any female member of the community, may attend. The only obligation is that of not disclosing the names of members outside the meeting. • C- Closed meeting, for members whose safety is at risk, will only be implemented in shelters so members are safe. • PE- Psycho-education of domestic violence Choose your Meeting Type • D- Discussion, a member discloses her story and suggests a topic for sharing. This meeting should only be intended for those who are sponsors or who have already overcome the 12-Steps. • BG- Beginner’s meeting, focuses on newcomers issues. • NC- Not child friendly (most meetings are not child friendly, except for open meetings when specified). • CC- Childcare available Curriculum • To implement it in your community you can use the curriculum attached. • Advocates are also encouraged to read literature such as – – – – “Como Recuperar su Autoestima?” by Carolynn Hillman “Abuso Emocional” by Mariana Barrancos “Recuperarse del Daño” by Jennifer Y. Levy-Peck “Mejor Sola que Mal Acompanada” by Mirna M. Zambrano. Challenges • Mothers will have arrange childcare if group is not child friendly. Sometimes mothers don’t have the economic and social support to leave children with someone else. • Providing childcare in an adjacent room might increase chances of attendance. • Individuals within the group will progress at varying speeds and with varying success. Advertising Groups • Outside of supermarkets such as La Vallarta, Super King, food banks, 99 cent stores, bus stations, churches, women shelters, parks, schools and Hispanic radio stations and newspapers.
