My mother is part African-American and Japanese. My
father is part African-American, Native American, and,
Caucasian. I describe myself as an African-American male.
I was around 12 or 13. During the summer I would play street basketball
every day at the local elementary school. For the most part, we would come
to the court with our five guys ready to play against any other five.
Sometimes less than five of us would go to the court together, so we'd have to
pick up somebody else to complete the team. I can remember times when we
didn't pick a kid specifically because he was white. At the time, our feeling
was that "white dudes can't ball."
I played soccer until I was about 14. Most of the kids in the league were
white, so I had a lot of white friends. Sometimes we would talk about
music and TV and I'd be one of the only two or three minorities in the group.
I would be completely lost and think to myself, "Only white people listen to
that stuff." I wasn't being excluded but I did feel excluded. I just felt
different from them.
