This year is the 12th edition. VIE festival continues to explore the contemporary Italian
and international performing arts panorama and it does so by organising a festival full of
events and shows. From Thursday, October 13, 2016 to Sunday, October 23, 2016,
twentythree companies will feature their works in several venues in the cities of Modena,
Bologna, Carpi and Vignola.
For years the VIE festival has been teaching us how to appreciate some of the major
protagonists of the international theatre scene. It is uniquely capable of transmitting the
vitality of the contemporary scene, they move our present, the intensity of the plays, the
tradition of the avant-garde and the modern trend of the theatre.
It is festival that chooses to show its audience the work of the grandest directors, for
example Theodoros Terzopoulos, Oskaras Koršunovas, Juozas Budraitis, as well as
young, emerging artists such as ErosAntEros or Gli Omini. This gives them the precious
opportunity to introduce themselves to a privileged, attentive audience, reminding us once
more that the theatre is engaging in the encounter between the audience and the stage.
VIE is like a journey, an experience of contemporary theatre, a place to gather the many
voices of our present time.
On October 13, 2016 for the first time ever in Italy, the VIE Festival twelfth edition will
debut at Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti in Modena with Tristesses , a production by
Prospero Project. Using stage devices closely connected to the language of cinema,
Anne-Cécile Vandalem's musical theatre analyses the demotivation and despair of
people that are the most used arguments of our times.
Even the collective act of storytelling of the Berlin in Perhaps all the Dragons (from
October 21 to 23, 2016 venue Chiesa San Carlo, Modena) makes use of the cinema code.
Thirty spectators interact with thirty stories which may seem distant, apparently unrelated.
Cinema, finger dancing, dreams, poetry and childhood memories are some of the
elements in Kiss and Cry (October 18 -19, 2016 at Teatro Arena del Sole, Bologna), one of
the most original creations on the European scene by Michèle Anne De Mey and Jaco
Van Dormael, the author and director of the film The Brand New Testament and Mr.
Nobody, an award-winning film of 2009.
Aminta, the performative installation by Luca Brinchi and Daniele Spanò ( October 16,
2016 at Teatro delle Passioni, Modena), based on the pastoral drama by Torquato Tasso,
casts an inquiring glance of interest on the new techniques and video devices for the
scene.
The music with C’Mon Tigre’s concert-play has great importance in this festival. The
digital animations by Gianluigi Toccafondo, one of the biggest Italian illustrators, and the
experimental jazz and funk music by C’Mon Tigre meet on October 19, 2016 at Teatro
Comunale, Carpi in C’Mon Tigre racconta Toccafondo, a show full of contaminations.
Music is still the one that it is used to enrich Più Giù (October 15-16, 2016 Laboratorio
delle Arti, Bologna), the work by Stefano Ricci, another painter and illustrator
internationally renowned, which is presented for the first time ever: with the collaboration of
Danio Manfredini. Ricci will draw live accompanied by Giacomo Piermatti’s double bass
and Vincenzo Core’s electric guitar
Virginio Sieni's last work Ballo 1890_Natura morta (The Ball 1890 - Still-life painting),
presented at VIE Festival for the first time ever. It is interwoven with figurative arts
(October 15-16, Teatro Storchi, Modena). It is a sort of choreographic score dedicated to
Giorgio Morandi, the famous Bologna local artist.
Wang Mengfan and Li Jianjun's works, presented as a national première, are a tribute to
the Chinese theatre: 50/60 (October 14-16, 2016, Teatro delle Moline, Bologna) . It is a
dance performance whose main characters and dancers are women born in China in the
50s and 60s . A Man Who Flies Up to the Sky (October 21-23, 2016, Teatro delle Moline,
Bologna) is a play about the concept of vision transferred on the stage through
photographic language.
The VIE Festival twelfth edition hosts two Maestros from the international scene:
Theodoros Terzopoulos following the incredible success of Alarme at the VIE Festival in
2013 presents his Amor (October 19-20, 2016 at Teatro delle Passioni, Modena) for the
first time ever.
Oskaras Koršunovas directs the world famous actor Juozas Budraitis in the play by
Beckett, Krapp’s last tape (October 22-23, 2016, Teatro delle Passioni, Modena) .
it is presented at the VIE Festival as a national première.

Theatre, Burning Doors the premiere in Italy will be held at the VIE Festival (October
22-23, 2016 , Teatro Storchi , Modena).
For the first time ever, Maria Alyokhina, a member of the Pussy Riot group will be
starring as an actress. She tells the different stories about the persecuted artists and their
art in the awful Russian prisons.
Motus’ new show, called Raffiche (October 18-22, 2016 at Hotel Carlton, Bologna), is
about the themes of freedom and censorship. This season of plays in the city of Bologna
starts with the play Hello Stranger dedicated to the company for their 25th anniversary.
The theatre project continues until the end of December 2016 in various locations in the
city of Bologna and involves a number of institutions and local professionals.
(www.hellostranger.it) Fourteen years after their ‘historical’ interpretation of Jean Genet’s
Splendid’s, copyright regulations prevent Motus from changing this show by switching the
characters’ gender. Raffiche originates from this denial.
The Swedish Backa Theatre of Göteborg presents the national premiere The Misfits
(October 22-23,2016 at Teatro Arena del Sole, Bologna) at the VIE Festival, as part of the
Prospero project. The work of the playwright Mattias Andersson tries to communicate
with the young people belonging to the poorest social classes of Swedish society.
As every year, the Vie Festival welcomes young emerging companies: ErosAntEros
company debuts with Allarmi! on October 13, 2016 at Teatro Arena del Sole. This show
benefits from the cooperation with Emanuele Aldrovandi, a 30-year-old playwright
already awarded with several prestigious national prizes. Allarmi! investigates the

railway route called 'Porrettana'.
