This series of seminars identifies two apparently contradictory characteristics of
fashion: materiality and immateriality. It will look at fashion firstly as a material
artefact worn on the body, and secondly as a kind of pose, or performance,
consisting of immaterial gestures and attitudes. It will also consider whether
these categories are really antithetical or, as seems more likely, they are
profoundly inter-dependant. Throughout, the seminars will explore their links to
memory, time, the body and narrative
