Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your interest in the ZEOvit ® system. ZEOvit ® is a system that makes it easy to keep your corals brillant and colorful and to achieve good and healthy growth with natural appearance and polyps. The ZEOvit ® system consists of two columns: Column 1 is the basic system, column 2 deals with coral coloration and food in a system with nearly natural conditions. The basic system serves to adjust the nutrients and maintenance of wa ter conditions close to the parameters corals encounter in their natural habitat. This column consists of the following components: • Balanced mix of zeolites ZEOvit ® (water flow 200 – 400 litres per 1 litre ZEOvit ® • Microorganism solution (ZEObak) • Combination product of bacteria and coral food (ZEOfood) • Phosphate and nitrate reductor (ZEOstart) • Constant filtration with activated carbon To be successful the following requirements are also necessary for the ZEOvit ® system: • Efficient strong skimming • Sufficient lighting and streaming • Optimization of nutrient addition • Addition of elements at low levels • Optimum water parameters (Ca, Mg, KH, salinity) • Regular weekly water changes Please be patient with your animals, depending on the age of the tank and the accumulation of nutriens and elements, it may take 3 – 12 months to change a system into the ZEOvit ® method and to show success. Please note that a higher dosing than printed on the packaging of the product will not improve the effect but would influence the effect in a negative way! Our longest conversion took 11 months in a tank that had been established for 15 years. This change was done slowly and carefully without any loss of corals. Subsequently, success will occur fast and can be maintained if the above mentioned points are followed. One must keep in mind that additions in this environment have delayed reactions of 2 – 3 days. This fact is very important when adding elements. We recommend, when dosing elements with unknown effects to dose carefully and only once. Wait a few days and observe your corals reactions. All dosing quantities and intervals given on our products are recommen ded for heavy stocked tanks. Please note that our products are highly concentrated and the dosing has to be done carefully – please do not increase dosing recommendation printed on the products in no case. For lightly stocked tanks we recommend to dose just half of the quantities mentioned on the products.

Each of our products can be used independently of the ZEOvit ® system in any reef tank with flawless effect, so you can use each of the products with any other system also.

This system is not only for SPS corals – keeping clams, leather and soft corals, as well as LPS corals with this system is simple as you can see in our tanks that have been established for years. It is also ideal to use the ZEOvit ® system right from the start of tanks already stocked with live rock to reduce the initial cycle. Please find further info on page 16 and 17.

Adjustment to the natural nutrient situation in coral reefs ZEOvit

®

– mix of zeolites ZEOvit

®

ZEOvit ® is a balanced mix of zeolites. The ex change of the ZEOvit ® media depends on the tanks nutrient load and is limited to 6-12 weeks. The amount of ZEOvit ® used is 1 liter per 400 l/ 100 gallons of water. Water flow through the fil ter material: 200 – 400 liters per hour. Run in a ZEOvit ® filter (flow direction from bottom to the top), for easy and fast cleaning of the material from mulm and deposits. • In an alternating environment of aerobic and anaerobic conditions the microorganisms/ bacteria will aspirate nitrate and phosphate. This can be achieved by switching a pump on and off at an interval of 3 hours (the material must not be exposed to air while pump is off).

ZEObak

® ® . The essential microorganism solution for a healthy, well-balanced and efficient bacterial fauna in a tank. Used in combination with ZEOfood and ZEOstart, partly building up bacteria plankton, that is absorbed by many corals which in turn leads to more intense coloration. Contents: 1 l • Contains several bacterial strains that form a chain to reduce unwanted substances • Corals can use the added microorganisms as a food source • Removes slime algae the natural way and establishes a healthy biology • Easy to dose also in small tanks due to the pipette bottles.

ZEOfood

ZEOfood is a combination product of bacteria and coral food. ZEOfood contains amino acids as well as several vitamins, which enable the coral to take up necessary nutrients leading to natural coloration. Enhances growth of all corals.

ZEOstart2 – Phosphate & Nitrate Reductor

This product is a food source and promotes the reproduction of all nitrifying bacteria in the aquarium. It is therefore very effective in reducing phosphate (PO4) and nitrate (NO3). ZEOstart2 was developed for reefers who want optimum water parameters in a biological way. The skimmer removes up to 100 % more concentrated absorbate. Do not increase dosage (as printed on the label of the bottle), as this is a highly concentrated product!

• Reduces phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and several inhibitors • To start a new tank it shortens the initial phase enormously • Bacteria dependent slime algae disappears rapidly and a biological balance is re-established • Enhancing natural coloration of Acropora, Montipora, Pocillopora and Stylophora • Soft corals grow faster and open the polyps wider Contents: 250 ml / 500 ml / 1000 ml special sizes upon request

Activated Carbon Korallenzucht

Use 1 liter of activated carbon per 250 gallons of water. Put it in a mesh bag in a passively flown filter bypass or on top of the ZEOvit ® into the ZEOvit ® filter. The activated carbon remains permanently as a filter in the system. Comple tely replace the activated carbon every 30 days. Rinse the carbon briefly with hot water before use. • High quality activated carbon especially developed for salt water tanks • Better polyp extension • Adsorbs toxins, toxic compounds, yellowing compounds and proteins • Keeps your tank water crystal clear • Does not remove any trace elements!

Effi cient strong skimming

The REVOLUTION models for all tank sizes

Powerful: The REVOLUTION models add air effective but hence gently with a spacious nozzle. Therefore the skimming is very natural and gentle. The water is not “beaten” like done by a needle wheel, elements are not precipitated and plankton is saved. The elaborated, utility patent protected and patent pending conical shape is pushing the foam with a relative low air quantity (water-air proportion ca. 3 – 4:1, depending on model) into the collection cup nearly of its own. The top foam reminds on the foam formation at the sea, it is soft and creamy. The S model e.g. works with a water amount of about 1.500 L/h with just about 500 L air per hour which creates a very good, gently and efficient skimming process.

Experienced SPS keepers can notice posi tive changes in their delicate corals even after a few days.

Optimization of nutrient addition

For the removal of dissolved solids from top off water and water changes we recommend a reverse osmosis system and a de-ionization unit after the RO unit. Also a complete demineralisation resin can be used. Decisive criteria is the pollution of tap water and elevated TDS readings after the unit. You will find different models in the online shop at

Purest Water Filter Resin Korallenzucht

The filter resin should be used as last stage of the reverse osmosis system to remove any residual salts.

BIOphos 2 Phosphate and silicate adsorber

Iron based granulate for removal of phosphate and silicates in sea and freshwater tanks. Application: slow water flow in a filter bypass. 1 kg can absorb approximately 60 gr of phosphate. Biophos 2 should be exchanged as soon as PO4 is measurable at the PO4 reactor outlet. To enforce the effect of the adsorber we recommend to place the wet adsorber overnight in the freezer. Do not use phosphate adsorbers in combination with the ZEOvit ® system.

BIOphos 3 Phosphate and silicate adsorber

Aluminium based granulate for removal of phosphate and silicates in sea and freshwater tanks. Appliance: slow water flow in a bypass of the filter. Contents: 500 ml / 1000 m

Nutrition, coloration and growth of the corals

The nutrition, coloration and growth of corals is a very complex topic, working inseparably hand in hand and hence is described in one unit. Please also find this products listed for different problem solving criteria on page 18. Coral Vitalizer – High Quality Coralfood Concentrate

The Coralfood Concentrate contains both liquid and solid elements, providing food to SPS corals as well as several soft corals. First results can be seen after 7 – 10 days. When the corals are used to the feeding you will notice increased polyp expansion, e.g. of Acropora are fully extended even during the light period.

Sponge Power

• Special food for sponges, tridacna clams and sea squirt.

• Enhanced growth of sponges and sea squirt support their water cleaning character and thus water quality significantly.

• SPS corals get longer colored growing tips.

• Especially purple is enhanced on all SPS.

• The recovery of harmed corals is highly improved. This product enhances colouration of your hard corals. Special mixture of the most effective substances for coloration.

ZEOspur2

With this trace element solution it is possible to influence the amount of zooxanthellae in the coral tissue.

• The coral itself has more energy for growth because the reduced zooxanthellae density requires less energy • Controlled reduction of zooxanthellae density for Acropora, Anacropora or Montipora • The reduction of zooxanthellae in the outer layers brings out the colors from deeper layers • To maintain color of highly colored corals • The result can be seen 24 h after dosing, and reaches the highest level after 48 h Contents: 250 ml / 500 ml / 1000 ml

ZEOspur Macroelements is a result of our prac tical experiences in keeping extremely colorful corals and is an optimal addition to ZEOspur2.

Iron Concentrate Pohl‘s K-Balance Potassium Concentrate

Potassium is a major element in sea water. K-Balance contains multiple potassium salts in high concentration. Our tests in several tanks have shown the benefits in color and growth after dosing a few days. • Polyp expansion within short time • Enhances growth and coloration of all corals, especially in SPS like Montipora, Stylophora, Seriatopora, Pocillopora, Acropora Contents: 500 ml / 1000 ml • The addition of iron affects all colors but primarily enhances the green color formation • Iron increases coral growth and also the multiplication of zooxanthella • Well suited for all kind of corals Contents: 50 ml / 100 ml

A constant addition of calcium, magnesium and carbonate is also very important. To keep the parameters steadily we recom mend the constant addition with a CO2 calcium reactor, filled with coral gravel and according to the tanks individual con sumption also with magnesium granulate (ZEOmag) and calcium granulate (Calcium plus), without the permanent addition and accumulation of chloride and / or sulphate.

CO2 Calcium Reactor

Our powerful calcium reactors are developed up to 20,000 l systems. Minimal CO 2 consumption due to the internal CO 2 recirculation to optimize output.

Calcium Plus Granulate

• Calcium Plus Granulate to increase calcium levels with a CO 2 calcium reactor. Magnesium and carbonate remain unaffected. Contents: 1 kg

ZEOmag - Pure Magnesium Granulate

ZEOmag is a pure magnesium granulate to mix with the coral gravel in the CO 2 calcium reactor. Coarse grain of 6 – 12 mm.

Coral Gravel

To increase mainly carbonate hardness but also calcium with a CO 2 calcium reactor. Due to the regional provenance natural coral gravel has clear differences in suitability. • Very pure coral gravel from best coral regions • Coarse grain (15 – 25 mm) • Soak 3 – 4 days before usage in reverse os- mosis water. Regular or if possible weekly tests of Ca, Mg, K+, KH and Salinity are very important to be able to add the consumed elements according to the individual needs of each tank.

Test Kit Potassium:

Potassium is a main element in sea water. It is consumed permanently by your animals.

We recommend to test its concentration every 10 – 14 days regular.

For testing Ca and KH we recommend the test kits offered by Macherey-Nagel.

Coral Snow

• Coral Snow is a liquid secondary biological facilitator for elements • For small polyp and large polyp hard corals, soft corals and clams • Neutralizes undesirable acids and is a solu tion for e.g. slime algae and cyano bacteria. • The temporary cloudiness in the water is harmless for all fish as well as sensitive corals.

• Against slime algae and cyano bacteria: mix with ZEObak and dose directly into the main tank daily. Also check the reverse osmosis water with an accurate TDS meter!

ZEOlife

ZEOlife is a liquid filter media and was developed to start and speed up certain metabolic processes in a tank. REGULAR WATER CHANGES

To get a balanced addition of elements contained in the salt mixes we recommend a regular water change of about 5 to 15 % of the system volume every 14 days, depending to the actual nutrient situation and stocking level. Agitate the mixing water with a pump and heat it to 25 ° C. As soon as this temperature is reached the salt can be slowly poured into the water. When the salt is dissolved after about 5 minutes the fresh seawater can be used. We recommend a salinity of 34 – 35 ‰ at 25° C.

Lighting

During the last years T5 bulbs have proven very well for sea water aqua ristics. They can be used alone or in combination with metal halides. Due to many practical experiments in our grow-out and holding systems we recommend a lighting tempera ture in the range of 10,000 – 14,000 Kelvin, as with our experience this is the best choice for intensive coral coloration.

T5 Coral Light 10000K

Well proven standard spectrum, tested for all kind of corals with about 10000 Kelvin. High live range, high class German quality product.

T5 Coral Light New Generation 14000K

Optimized color mixture for fantastic colo ration with an elevated blue level. No additi onal blue bulbs necessary. We recommend the combination with Fiji Purple and Coral Light 10000K.

T5 Fiji Purple

New T5 high performance bulb with blue and red spectrum. Perfect combination with Coral Light and Coral Light New Generation. Hard corals increase coloration intensively, especially pink, purple and red. Also fish even look more nice and show their complete blaze of color. Algae growth is not enhanced.

Setting up a new sea water tank Initial cycle with the ZEOvit

®

system: complete stocking after just 14 days!

Here we go:

Day 0

Day 0: Install an appropriate sea water tank, install the sump, install necessary PVC tubing and make sure to give the glue enough time to dry!

Day 1

1. Water

Fill the system with reverse osmosis water, if possible use the RO unit with a filter resin as last stage (please see p. 7). Warm up the water to 20 – 25° C and install current pumps at the same time.

2. Current

We recommend a smooth and broad flow, about 20 – 30 times of the tank’s volume per hour. Also well approved is the combination with Osci-Motion – they create a very natural shifting streaming due to the pivoting pumps.

3. Sea Salt

As soon as the water temperature is around 25° C add Reefer‘s Best salt slowly into the current and adopt the salinity around 34 ‰. Live rock can be added as soon as the salt has dissolved completely and the water is clear.

4. Live Rock

It is very important to use fresh and clean live rock, approx. 10 % of the tank’s contents. Always available in our online shop or in our store in Coburg. Rock work can easily and stable be fixed with Speedglue (s. p. 15) without harming the water quality in any way.

5. Sand Bed

Now you can add a shallow sand bed. Use crushed Coral Sand or Aragonite from Koral lenzucht. Do not use Live Sand in combination with the ZEOvit ® system.

Coral Sand

For sand bed or the usage in a CO2 calcium reactor. Very clean coral sand from the best coral regions in a optimal size of 2 – 4 mm. Soak in reverse osmosis water for 3 – 4 days before use and replace osmosis water daily. Contents: 1kg / 4.6 kg

Aragonite

High quality sand without phosphates for sand bed. Contents: 1 kg / 4.6 kg

6. Start the ZEOvit ® filter

Use 1 liter ZEOvit ® for each 400 l of water tank volume. Do not exceed flow rate through the filter of 400 l per hour maximum.

7. Lighting and other technical equipment

Start the lighting (we recommend a minimum of 8 hours daily) as well all other technical equipment.

8. Dosage

• The addition of ZEObak, ZEOstart and Sponge Power can be started now. • ZEObak: 5 ml per 100 liters/25 gallons • ZEOstart: 10 ml per 100 liters/25 gallons • Sponge Power: 3 ml per 100 liters/25 gallons

Day 2 and Day 3

Dosing break.

Day 4

Dose ZEObak, ZEOstart and Sponge Power as recommended on the products label.

Day 4 – 10

Different algae phases can appear, like some brown slime algae followed by some healthy green algae. Use the same dosage like descri bed for day 4. Double check Salinity.

Day 10

First herbivore fish (max. 2 per 200 L) can be added, also sea urchins and turbo snails. You should also be able to add the first not to sen sitive corals like branching Montipora. Add now the Activated Carbon.

Activated Carbon

As soon as the first animals are stocked into the system, add the Activated Carbon: 0.5 – 1 Liter per 1000 liters as recommended. Replacement interval 30 days.

Day 11 – 14

Keep dosage as described for day 4. Test Carbonate Hardness and Salinity carefully. More corals can now be added into the system. Additional fish can be added but should be done very slow. Also fish feeding has to be done very carefully in this phase as biology is not very stabile in this phase. Do not add more fish than 1 – 2 fish per 250 liters per week. After additional 4 weeks you can add the rest of the fish which where planned for the system.

Quick Reference – Problem solving

This is a quick guide line, telling you which product can be used for which purpose. This reference will also be helpful as a problem solver for different problems.

Coloration

Pohl’s Xtra, B-Balance, Sponge Power, ZEOspur 2, Stylo-Poci-Glow, Macroelements, K-Balance, Iron Concentrate, Iodide Complex, Potassium Iodide fluoride

Phosphate/Nitrate

Use ZEOvit ® , ZEObak, ZEOstart and Activated Carbon. Also BIOphos 2 and 3 can be used (not necessary when using the ZEOvit ® sys tem). Coral sand and Coral gravel should be soaked in reverse osmosis water before use. Use ZEOlife.

Slime algae

Mix ZEObak and Coral Snow and dose the mixture daily. Add a filtration resin as the last stage of your RO unit and check the RO water with a TDS meter. Test for a adequate Calcium level, approx. 410 mg/l is ideal. Check life time of tubes and bulbs. Test for PO4 and cross check salinity. Siphon out slime algae.

Tissue Narcosis from the tips

Check calcium level. Check phosphates, maybe phosphates were reduced to quick. Use Coral Snow.

Tissue Narcosis from the base

Do a higher water change. Dose Sponge Power and Pohl’s Xtra. Use Coral Snow and Activated Carbon. Cross check Salinity and basic water parameters.

Bubbling in tissue and tips

Check calcium level.

Yellowing compounds in the water

Use Activated Carbon. Dose Coral Snow

Goniopora/Alveopora bad polyp extension

Place in a lower flow and light area. Use Coral Vitalizer, Amino Acid.

Pale colors on Seriatopora, Stylophora, Pocillopora corals

Dose Stylo-Poci-Glow. Check the potassium level and Salinity. Avoid quick changes in salinity. Dose Pohl’s Xtra and B-Balance.

Brown coloration of Acropora and other SPS corals

Dose Pohl’s Xtra, ZEOspur 2, Stylo-Poci-Glow, B-Balance and the ZEOvit ® -System base products.

General bad look of corals

Water change of approx 30 % with Reefer’s Best salt, crosscheck salinity. Possible helpful: Sponge Power, Coral Snow, Pohl’s Xtra, Coral Vitalizer.

Increase polyp extension

Dose Coral Vitalizer, use activated carbon.

Pale coloration, bad polyp extension of Acropora, Montipora and Seriatopora corals

Observe for any kind of pests like e.g. Acropora tissue eating turbellara, Montipora tissue eating snails or other pests. Most parasites are hard to find so check the corals closely. Dip the affected corals in iodide or fresh water (take care not all corals tolerate a fresh water bath) or manual remove (e.g. clam snails), also Rhynchocinetes durbanensis and diffe rent wrasses can be helpful.
