Itinerary n. 1
THE COUNTY OF GORIZIA.
Hamlet Borgo Castello’s charm.
What are the origins of Gorizia? How did men and women
used to live here in the Middle Ages? This and much more
is going to be revealed through this itinerary. Starting from
the Castle Museum, we will discover characters, intrigues
and conflicts related to the Middle Ages in Gorizia. From
the top of the hill we will admire the amazing landscape in
front of us: we will be geographically right in the middle
of Europe. We will also take you to the little Church of the
Holy Spirit, which is the oldest example of late gothic style
in Gorizia. Moreover, we will reveal the secrets and stories
still lingering among the architectures of the palaces Dornberg and Tasso, where our tour will come to an end, but not
before a visit to the arts collection of the Gorizia Provincial
Museums.

FROM THE HABSBURGS TO THE COUNTERREFORMATION IN GORIZIA.
All the different sides of a city.
We will experience a fascinating journey to discover the secrets
of 16th Century Gorizia, when the city came under Habsburg
rule and was influenced by a particular religious ferment between
Reformation and Counter Reformation. We will approach the
history of Gorizia with a multicultural perspective, in order to investigate all its religious facets. Starting from the squares Piazza
Sant’Antonio and Piazza Cavour, we will proceed to Piazza della
Vittoria to admire the Baroque Church of St. Ignatius and to
know more about the importance of the Jesuits in everyday life
at that time. We will then explore the expansion of Protestantism in these lands by focusing on the multilingual preachings of
Primož Trubar, thus arriving to the former Lutheran Protestant
Church (nowadays Evangelical Methodist Church) in Via Diaz,
commissioned by the Ritter Family. Finally, we will talk about
Judaism by reaching the Ashkenazi Synagogue in Via Ascoli. Do
not miss your chance to discover Gorizia’s most secret places.

Spirituality and artistic genius
through the churches of the city.
In 1751, after the suppression of the Patriarchate of Aquileia,
Gorizia became the seat of an Archdiocese. From that moment
onwards, the city inherited the largest part of this former institution’s wonderful treasure. The culture and sophistications
of the clergy in Gorizia quickly contributed to strengthening
the ecclesial life of the city, while shaping many of its features.
We will have the rare opportunity of visiting the Palace of the
Archbishop and the annexed Chapel of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross. The palace was erected in 16th century for the Cobenzl family and its walls hold important works of the local
painter Giuseppe Tominz. We will then enter the Church of St.
Charles, which stands next to the old seat of the Central Theological Seminary, that is still hosting its library. Finally, we
cannot miss the cathedral dedicated to the Saints Hilarius and
Tatianus. Its stratified architecture shows the evolution in aesthetic and cultural taste through the centuries.

expect: by analyzing the documents conserved in such places we can find out many secret aspects related to history and
arts of Gorizia. The first itinerary (A) includes the Diocesan
Archives of Gorizia, while the second route (B) will lead you
to the Isontina State Library hosted in the beautiful Werdenberg Palace.
The routes can be subject to variations, which will depend on
the permission granted by the host institutions.
Maximum of 15 participants per tour (larger groups are
requested to contact Arteventi before their arrival).
