Coastal cities have a special, hidden appeal, especially for
people who work and live a long way from the Mediterranean
and its changing colours, scents and views. And it is true that
Genoa, Livorno, Cattolica (Rimini) and Cala Gonone, each
in its own way, have the typical characteristics of towns that
stand on the shore of the “furrowed sea” and prepare

nascosti, soprattutto per chi lavora e vive lontano
dai colori, dai profumi e dagli orizzonti mutevoli che il
Mediterraneo sa regalare. E così Genova, Livorno,
Cattolica (Rimini), Cala Gonone offrono da subito le

L’Acquario di Genova, uno dei più ricchi in Europa
per specie animali ospitate, si allunga dalla
medievale Ripa Maris verso il porto turistico della
città, collegando la suggestiva Isola delle chiatte
alla terraferma. In testa al molo, parte integrante
del percorso di visita all’Acquario, la tolda della
Grande Nave Blu regala una veduta
particolarmente suggestiva, soprattutto al
tramonto, della città affacciata sul mare.
La struttura in vetro e acciaio della Biosfera riflette,
poco lontano, cielo e mare mentre mobili vele
bianche riparano dal sole l’ambiente tropicale
visitabile all’interno. Poco lontano il Bigo offre la
possibilità di vedere Genova dall’alto grazie a una
cabina rotante che racconta la città e il suo porto in
un “piano sequenza” memorabile. La città
dei bambini e dei ragazzi, nella splendida cornice
architettonica dei Magazzini del Cotone, è il primo
grande centro in Italia dedicato a bambini e ragazzi
dai 2 ai 12 anni che imparano divertendosi.

Acquario di Genova has one of Europe’s most varied
collections of animal species. It extends out
from the Medieval Ripa Maris to the marina, connecting
the evocative Isola delle Chiatte to dry land. At the seaward
tip of the pier, the deck of the Grande Nave Blu, which forms
an integral part of the aquarium itinerary, offers a particularly
inspiring view of the city, expecially at sunset. Nearby, the
steel and glass structure of the Biosfera reflects the sky and
sea, while inside mobile white sails shelter the tropical
environment from the sun. Not far away, the Bigo panoramic
lift offers visitors a stunning aerial view of Genoa and its port
from a rotating cabin that rises 40m into the air.

architectural setting of the Magazzini del Cotone, is Italy’s first
major centre where children and adolescents in the 2 to 12
year old age band learn while having fun.

Near the Darsena – where the Nazario Sauro submarine
(S518) is moored and can be visited – is the
Galata Museo del Mare, Italy’s largest exhibition devoted
to the centuries-old relationship between man and the sea.
Acquario di Livorno occupies two floors
in a striking position on the seafront promenade
that looks out over the Whale Sanctuary.
Acquario di Cattolica, the largest on the Adriatic coast,
presents an undersea “journey around the world” that explains
how life developed on earth in this fundamental element.
Acquario di Cala Gonone in Sardinia, which was officially
opened in 2010, is a new concept structure that is perfectly
integrated with the natural context and landscape
of the Gulf of Orosei, one of the most striking stretches

Vicino alla Darsena – dove è ormeggiato e visitabile
il sommergibile S518 Nazario Sauro –
il Galata Museo del Mare si propone come
il più grande spazio in Italia dedicato al secolare
rapporto tra l’uomo e il mare. L’Acquario di Livorno,
sul lungomare affacciato al Santuario dei Cetacei,
si sviluppa su due piani in una posizione di forte
impatto emotivo e scenografico.
L’Acquario di Cattolica è il più grande del Mare
Adriatico e in un “giro del mondo” sotto la
superficie dell’acqua racconta come la vita sul
pianeta si sia sviluppata proprio grazie a questo
prezioso elemento. In Sardegna, l’Acquario di Cala
Gonone, inaugurato nel 2010, è una struttura di
nuova concezione perfettamente inserita
nel contesto naturale e paesaggistico del Golfo
di Orosei, tra i più suggestivi del Mediterraneo.

ACQUARIO DI GENOVA
Designed by Renzo Piano for the
1992 Christopher Columbus
celebrations, the aquarium now has
70 tanks and is home to hundreds
of species, from manatees – the
mermaids of myth – to penguins and
much-loved dolphins, and from
sharks – the great hunters of the sea
– to the transparent fragility of jelly
fish, friendly seals, brightly coloured
tropical fish and rays that visitors can touch. In its splendid
location in Genoa’s old port area, which has finally been
reunited with the city, the aquarium is visited each year by
1.2 million tourists and is one of the most important
attractions contributing to the recent “repositioning”
of Genoa as a city of art and a centre for cultural
and scientific education and entertainment.
An ever-changing itinerary (a 90-meter extension
of the exhibition structure has already been financed),
an ability to listen to visitors and their suggestions
for new products and a commitment to education and
the environment are the main drivers of more than twenty
years’ success reported by Acquario di Genova,
confirming the far-sightedness of the original strategy
to make education entertaining. When the aquarium is closed
to the public, the spectacular undersea settings carefully
reproduced in the tanks are transformed into prestigious
locations for unforgettable events that combine the pleasure
of an elegant, relaxing evening with the fascination
of a uniquely engaging cultural experience.

Progettato da Renzo Piano in occasione delle
celebrazioni Colombiane del ‘92, è oggi composto
da 70 vasche e ospita centinaia di specie:
dai lamantini – le mitiche sirene – ai pinguini,
agli amatissimi delfini; dagli squali – i grandi
predatori del mare – alle fragili trasparenze delle
meduse, alle simpatiche foche, ai coloratissimi
pesci tropicali, alle razze che è possibile accarezzare.
Perfettamente inserito nell’antico porto della
gloriosa repubblica marinara finalmente riaffacciata
al suo mare, l’Acquario è visitato ogni anno
da 1,2 milioni di turisti ed è una delle strutture
più importanti nel recente “riposizionamento”
di Genova come città d’arte e polo di riferimento
dello svago qualitativo, culturale e scientifico.
Il continuo rinnovamento del percorso di visita – già
finanziato un prolungamento di 90 metri della
struttura espositiva – come pure l’ascolto
del cliente che induce nuovi prodotti e la convinta
mission educativa e ambientale sono il vero motore
del successo ventennale dell’Acquario di Genova
che premia così l’originario progetto strategico

Situated in the Darsena or old docks, on the site of the old
Arsenal where the galleys of the “Superba” were built at the
height of this maritime republic’s wealth and power, the Galata
Museo del Mare is a magical place where you can listen to
the stories that have established such a close relationship
between man and the sea. After visiting the Galata Museo del
Mare and its antique “globes”, navigational instruments,
wonderful models of sailing ships, a perfect replica of a
33 meter galley from the seventeenth century, and a full scale
reproduction of the main deck of an eighteenth century brig,
you seem to leave the building with your skin damp from
ocean spray! And after “piloting” your ship as it enters the port
of New York or saving the Titanic (with the help of a
sophisticated simulator), your journey continues in the shoes
of an Italian emigrant to “La Merica”. Setting off from the lanes
that weave a web behind the port of Genoa, tightly clutching
your passport and ticket, you can climb aboard the Città di
Torino steamer and land at Ellis Island, visit the Boca in
Buenos Aires or explore the Brazilian rain forest. But the
museum does not only look to the past, with a new section
featuring one of the boats used by illegal immigrants to sail to
Lampedusa. Your journey continues underwater with a visit to
Italy’s first floating museum, the Nazario Sauro submarine
(S518) moored outside. Visiting these

In Darsena, nell’antico Arsenale dove nel “Secolo
dei Genovesi” si costruivano le galee della ricca
e potente “Superba”, il Galata Museo del Mare
è luogo magico dove si ascoltano storie che
da sempre legano l’uomo al mare. Antichi “globi”,
preziosi strumenti di navigazione, splendidi modelli
di velieri, una secentesca galea di 33 metri
perfettamente ricostruita, il ponte di coperta in
scala reale di un brigantino ottocentesco: la visita al
Galata sembra lasciare sulla pelle il salino degli
oceani! E dopo aver “governato” per entrare nel
porto di New York o per salvare il Titanic (grazie a
un sofisticato simulatore) il viaggio prosegue nei
panni di emigranti italiani verso “La Merica”:
dai vicoli del porto di Genova, ultimo rifugio prima
di partire, muniti di passaporto e biglietto di
viaggio, si sale a bordo del piroscafo Città di Torino
per sbarcare a Ellis Island, visitare la Boca di
Buenos Aires o addentrarsi nella foresta brasiliana.
Dalle migrazioni del passato, una nuova sezione
del museo riporta alla dura attualità di un barcone
usato per raggiungere Lampedusa. Il viaggio
continua sotto il mare con la visita al sommergibile
S518 Nazario Sauro, ormeggiato davanti al Museo,
prima nave museo in Italia visitabile in acqua.
Accostarsi a questi moli, affacciarsi da terrazze che
guardano la città e il suo porto, ritrovarsi – per svago
o affari – in spazi dove mare e vento sono ospiti
cortesi, non mancherà di ricordarci quell’“ora che
volge il desio ai navicanti e ’ntenerisce il core...”.

Created in 1997 to introduce children to science and
technology through play, visits begin by looking at simple but
important scientific experiments and continue with gigantic
soap bubbles, a building site featuring scaffolding, cranes
and bricks, the energy room, a climbing wall, the “magic”
of television, the Internet and tomorrow’s world.
The variety of spaces available offers numerous opportunities
for companies to act as innovative partners and organise
TV commercials, photo shoots, new product launches
and integrated communication projects.
This encourages families to join in after business events, with

attraverso il gioco. La visita inizia tra esperimenti
scientifici semplici ma rigorosi, attraversa
gigantesche bolle di sapone, un piccolo cantiere
edile completo di ponteggi, gru e mattoni, la stanza
dell’energia, una parete per il climbing sino alle
“magie” della TV, di Internet, del futuro che incalza.
La varietà degli spazi permette di organizzare
spot TV, shooting fotografici, lancio di nuovi prodotti,
progetti integrati di comunicazione dove le aziende
possono proporsi partner con modalità innovative:
agevolando, al seguito di un evento business,

BIGO & BIOSFERA
Il Bigo – una gru per navi da carico – è affermato
simbolo dell’antico porto genovese riconquistato
alla città nel 1992 in occasione delle Colombiane.
Il suo braccio più alto solleva a 40 metri di quota
una cabina rotante che di Genova offre prospettive
indimenticabili. Da quell’altezza si ammirano
il centro storico più grande d’Europa,
i palazzi dal XV al XVII secolo, la settecentesca
cinta dei forti sulle alture, la città ottocentesca
e quella moderna dove svetta la torre del teatro
Carlo Felice, progetto di Aldo Rossi.

Looking seawards, the steel and glass Biosfera is home
to a delicate habitat where tropical animals and plants thrive.
In this small but packed botanical garden, big tree ferns,
banana trees, rubber trees, coffee bushes and vanilla,
tamarind and cinnamon plants provide the backdrop against
which birds, tortoises, fish and insects are free to move,
embodying the fragility of equatorial forests.

ACQUARIO DI LIVORNO
Deep ties link Acquario di Livorno with the surrounding area,
with the beauty of the Costa degli Etruschi, and with
the Sanctuary for Whales which can sometimes be seen
swimming wild in the open sea. Located in a striking position
on the seafront promenade near the impressive Mascagni
Terrace, Acquario di Livorno occupies a total area of about
3,000 sq m on two floors, with 20 tanks, 150 animal species
and a total of 1,200 specimens. On the first floor a space
for temporary exhibitions looks out over a large 1,000 sq m
terrace with a panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea,
completing a cultural offering which juxtaposes nature, history,
archaeology and art in a stimulating knowledge itinerary in

Un legame profondo unisce l’Acquario di Livorno

Situata sul lungomare cittadino, nei pressi della
splendida Terrazza Mascagni, in una posizione
privilegiata di forte impatto emotivo e scenografico,
la struttura espositiva dell’Acquario di Livorno
si sviluppa su due piani per circa 3.000 mq, con 20
vasche, 150 specie, per un totale di 1.200 animali.
Al primo piano uno spazio dedicato a mostre
temporanee si affaccia su un’ampia terrazza
di circa 1.000 mq con veduta panoramica sul Mar
Tirreno, completando un’offerta culturale che,
in puro stile edutainment, accosta natura, storia,

È il più grande Acquario del Mare Adriatico, allestito
all’interno di edifici storici degli anni ’30 che
richiamano una flotta di navi. Due ore di emozioni
“spiando” le movenze lente degli squali, la buffa
goffaggine dei pinguini sulla terraferma e la loro
sorprendente velocità una volta in mare, i simpatici
musi delle lontre e le tartarughe, rettili antichissimi.
Tremila esemplari per 400 specie che popolano 100
vasche (e le scoperte più sorprendenti sono forse in
quelle più piccole che ricreano con cura habitat
diversi, ricchi di vita e mistero!). Un giro del mondo
sotto la superficie dell’acqua per ricordare che la vita
del nostro Pianeta è nata proprio in questo elemento:
dal Mediterraneo, agli Oceani (Atlantico, Pacifico,
Indiano) per arrivare alla splendida scogliera corallina
popolata da organismi coloratissimi. Una scoperta
che si allarga a tutta la natura del pianeta, dai corsi
d’acqua, agli animali esotici anche terrestri fino a un
percorso interattivo per conoscere i suoni con cui
comunicano le creature acquatiche. L’acquario è un
luogo dove regna la bellezza ma anche un ambiente
per osservare un mondo prezioso per la vita di tutti.

Acquario di Cattolica, the largest on the Adriatic coast, has its
home in historical buildings from the 1930s that are
reminiscent of a fleet of ships. It offers visitors an emotion-filled
two hours “spying” on the slow movements of the sharks, the
comical clumsiness of the penguins on dry land and their
surprising speed in the water, cheeky-faced otters, turtles and
ancient reptiles. Three thousand specimens and 400 hundred
species in 100 tanks (funnily enough, some of the most
surprising discoveries are perhaps to be found in the smallest
tanks, which meticulously recreate different habitats teeming
with life and mystery). An underwater journey around the
world to remind ourselves that life on earth was born in this
very element: the Mediterranean, the oceans (Atlantic,
Pacific, Indian) and the wonderful coral reefs inhabited by
brightly coloured creatures. Our voyage of discovery extends
across the entire planet, from waterways and exotic sea and
land animals, right through to an interactive itinerary to get to
know about the sounds used by aquatic animals to
communicate. The aquarium is a fascinating place, but also
somewhere to observe a world that is precious for all our lives.

local area, Sardinia’s leading aquarium

example of modern architecture, with an
initial design prepared by the American
specialist Peter Chermayeff
and completed by Sardinian architect
Sebastiano Gaias.
Designed to integrate perfectly with
the evocative natural backdrop provided
by the Gulf of Orosei and set among centuries-old oleasters,
mastic trees, cistus plants and other typical features
of the Mediterranean maquis, Acquario di Cala Gonone is

di specie ittiche locali spesso trascurate,

Respect for the sea starts at the meal table
Costa Edutainment has been committed from the outset
to raising public awareness about the need for aquatic
habitats to be managed in a sustainable way.
Through the aquariums in Genoa and other Italian cities,
this commitment focuses on awareness about the subject
of fish consumption. The aim is to encourage consumers
to change their habits in order to rediscover and appreciate
often neglected local species, reducing the pressure
on over-exploited varieties.

E LE STELLE STANNO A GUARDARE
Una suggestiva esperienza alla scoperta della vita
notturna degli animali ospiti dell’Acquario di Genova
che si conclude con l’emozione di addormentarsi
davanti alla vasca dei grandi predatori del mare.
Rivolta ai bambini dai 7 ai 13 anni, si propone come
prodotto innovativo per aziende che si rivolgano a
un target famiglia, offrendo anche la possibilità di
organizzare serate ad hoc riservate ai propri clienti.
Dedicata al pubblico dei più giovani, è l’attività
serale de La città dei bambini e dei ragazzi che
consente di approfondire in modo coinvolgente e
divertente il tema dell’astronomia. Dopo un giocoso
e interessante approfondimento sulle costellazioni
sotto la volta celeste di un planetario, i giovani
partecipanti (6-9 anni) vivono un’esperienza unica
trascorrendo la notte “sotto le stelle della loro città”.

This initiative offers an exciting way to find out about the
nocturnal life of the fish and mammals that live in Acquario di
Genova, culminating in the exciting experience of falling
asleep next to the tank that contains these big sea hunters.
For children aged 7 to 13, this innovative product for
companies addressing a family audience also offers the
possibility of arranging special events for customers.
An evening event for children in the 6 to 9 age band
organised by La città dei bambini e dei ragazzi, offering an
engaging way to find out more about astronomy.
After an interesting and entertaining look at the night sky
in a planetarium, the youngsters involved are offered
the unique experience of spending all night
under the stars of their own “city”.

This dive into the world of maritime history combines
information about life on board with entertainment and play,
in the form of an evening tour of the 23 exhibition rooms
in the museum, from rowboats to transatlantic liners.

a guided tour of the Nazario Sauro submarine to find out
about the hard life led by the crew and the risks they faced.
The evening is brought to a close by a cocktail party
or gala dinner served in the Museum’s impressive exhibition
rooms and outdoor terraces.
