Abstract: Standard language comprehension experiments use hand-crafted experimental stimuli with a single
critical word per item, and investigate the effect of one (or, occasionally, two or three) explicit manipulations.
In this talk, I will promote an alternative approach that takes naturalistic sentences or texts as stimuli. Relevant
properties of each word of the stimuli are then quantified by computational linguistic models. In this manner,
we can investigate how these properties affect the comprehension process in general. I will present recent brain
imaging studies that apply this approach and discuss how they have provided a deeper understanding of
anticipatory language processing in the brain.
