Assumes the departure from the field was not in the normal course of play. A player may be off the field with the permission or at
the direction of the referee, in which case, the referee’s permission is needed to re-enter. A late-arriving player also needs the
permission of the referee to enter.
“Player” includes any rostered player (i.e., someone designated as a “starter”) who arrives after the match begins and enters the
field without the permission of the referee.

A substitute must always have the permission of the referee to enter the field and such entering could only occur at a stoppage of
play even with the referee’s permission.
