Anatomy of the Horse
Presentation Part 3: Muscular Structure
(Continued)
#8893-A
Organs of the Abdominal Cavity
• Lies behind the thoracic cavity
• Separated from the thoracic cavity by the
diaphragm.
– A body partition of muscle and connective tissue
• Contains the liver, spleen, kidneys, and organs of
the digestive system.
Organs of the Abdominal Cavity
Organs of the Abdominal
Cavity - Liver
• Lies directly behind the diaphragm
Organs of the Abdominal
Cavity - Liver
•
Functions include:
1. ) Metabolism of nutrients
•
Metabolism is the physical and chemical processes by
which living matter is produced, maintained, and
destroyed and by means which energy is available
•
Nutrients are substances that provide nourishment
Organs of the Abdominal
Cavity - Liver
• Functions Continued:
2.) Detoxification of drugs and poisons
• Detoxification is the act of removing poison or the
effects
3.) Storage of some nutrients
Organs of the Abdominal Cavity –
Spleen and Stomach
• Both lie behind the liver
and in front of the
intestines
• Part of the
gastrointestinal (G.I.)
tract and aid in digestion
and utilization of food
Organs of the Abdominal Cavity –
Spleen and Stomach
• Digestive disorders common
– Fair amount of noises normal in abdomen
– Lack of or strange noises may indicate problem
Organs of the Abdominal
Cavity - Kidneys
• Located in the loin
area
• One on each side of
the backbone
• Remove waste
Organs of the Abdominal
Cavity - Kidneys
• Conserve fluids and important components of
blood
• Sensitive or sore back may indicate kidney
disorder
Organs of the Pelvic Cavity
• Several organs lie within the abdominal and pelvic
cavity
– Rectum – terminal portion of intestines
– Full urinary bladder
• Male Reproductive Organs
• Female Reproductive Organs
Organs of the Pelvic Cavity – Male
Reproductive Organs
• Located toward the
back and base of pelvic
cavity
Organs of the Pelvic Cavity – Male
Reproductive Organs
• Palpate – examine by touch
• Veterinarian can feel the following:
– Left kidney
– Part of the bladder (may indicate urinary tract
abnormality)
– Some reproductive glands
Organs of the Pelvic Cavity –
Female Reproductive Organs
• Extend from the back of
the cavity to near the
abdominal cavity
Organs of the Pelvic Cavity –
Female Reproductive Organs
• When palpated, the following may be felt:
– Cervix
– Uterus
– Ovaries
– Left kidney
Summary
• The skeleton provides support for muscles,
protects the organs, and allows the horse to
move.
• Muscles in the neck and forearm should be long
and lean while muscles in the hindquarter vary by
breed and purpose.
Summary
• The thoracic cavity consists of the heart and lungs
and allows the horse to exercise long and hard.
• The abdominal cavity contains the liver, stomach,
spleen, kidneys and digestive organs.
Summary
• Several organs lie within the abdominal and
pelvic cavity
• By palpating a horse, reproductive organs can be
felt.
