Inherited and
Learned Traits
TRAITS
Traits are personal characteristics. They are
things about you, such as how you look or
what you like.
Inherited Traits
Some traits are given to you by mom and dad
through genes.
Genes are DNA information that is in your
cells.
We call these traits that are passed down
through genes “inherited” traits.
Examples of Inherited Traits







Eye Color
Hair Color
Skin Color
Height
Foot size
Moles, birthmarks, freckles
Some Diseases or conditions
EARLOBES



There are 2 types of
earlobes.
“Free”- bottom lobe
is dangly
“Attached”- no loop
in lobe- bottom goes
directly into side of
the head
“FREE”
“ATTACHED”
TONGUE ROLLER


If you can curl the
two sides of your
tongue up like a hot
dog bun, you are a
tongue roller.
This is totally genetic,
you can’t “learn” how
to do this.
What hand are you?????
 Are
you right
handed?
 Are you left
handed?
 Are you
ambidextrous?
EYE COLOR





What color are
your eyes?
Blue?
Brown?
Hazel?
Green?
WIDOW’S PEAK
 Do
you have a peak?
 Is your hairline
Widow’s
straight?
Peak
Cleft Chin

Learned Traits/Behaviors

Some traits are not passed down from your
parents, but you learned them over time
from those around you or your
environment.

Did you know…the spines of a cactus are actually modified leaves!
They are much smaller than leaves of other plants to help reduce
the amount of water they lose!

Plant inherited traits that help them survive in their environments:
•Some plants, called succulents, store water in their stems or leaves;
•Some plants have no leaves or small seasonal leaves that only grow after it rains.
•The lack of leaves helps reduce water loss during photosynthesis.
•Leafless plants conduct photosynthesis in their green stems.
•Long root systems spread out wide or go deep into the ground to absorb water;
•Some plants have a short life cycle, germinating in response to rain, growing,
flowering, and dying within one year. These plants can evade drought.
•Leaves with hair help shade the plant, reducing water loss.
•Spines to discourage animals from eating plants for water;
•Waxy coating on stems and leaves help reduce water loss.
•Flowers that open at night lure pollinators who are more likely to be active during
the cooler night.
