DO NOW: COMPLETE THE WEALTHY AND POOR
AMERICANS HANDOUT
ROMAN LAW AND ORDER
In
the republic, the Senate and
government made the laws, but
in the empire, the emperor made
all the laws
The
Senate still had meetings and
still wore clothes and accessories
that identified them as senators to
the people of Rome
ROMAN LAW AND ORDER
 Roman
laws were very strict, but crime was
incredibly common with the frequent
crimes being theft, murder, and assault
 The
police force of Rome carefully
protected the patricians and the area they
lived in, but did not do the same for the
plebeians
 This
made some places in Rome very
dangerous to the point where streets would
be closed off at night
ROMAN LAW AND ORDER
With
the lack of police in the
poor areas of Rome, the people
had to protect themselves
They
would wear poor clothes
to try and blend in and both
women and children were
advised not to walk alone
ROMAN LAW AND ORDER
Anyone
could accuse anyone
of a crime and the trial would
be decided by a jury
The
accused could wear poor
clothes and have family
members speak on their
behalf to try and help
convince the jury
ROMAN LAW AND ORDER
Romans
prided
themselves in saying
that their laws would
apply to all Romans
This
was not true as the
poor faced harsher
punishments than the
rich
