The story is written near the end of nineteenth
century, when the social status of women is
relatively low.

Woman vs. Marriage: women’s revolt against
social norms and their search for identity.
Mrs. Mallard:
1) He loves her husband, but she loves herself
more.
2) She is a round character because she changes
her attitude toward her husband.

1) External conflict:
Woman vs. Marriage (society)
2) Internal conflict:
Grief vs. Joy



Her room -- herself.
The Window—hope.
What she sees outside the window— life.
Appearance: “…they said she had died of heart
disease of the joy that kills.”
Reality: “… she would live for herself.”
