MARINE ENGINEERING AND OFFSHORE
TECHNOLOGY
OVERVIEW
India is poised to be one of the leading maritime nations. Indian companies are
expanding their fleet to increase their share in the increasing trade from Indian ports.
This led to increase in the maritime activity at the Indian coast. The Indian
shipbuilding sector is expected to grow annually by 30%. Its share in the world market
has soared in the last 5 years and the aim to be No.4 in the world is now within grasp.
What’s more, with the increase in the number of ships calling at Indian shipyards,
ship-repair facilities are becoming another increasingly attractive opportunity to boost
the industry.
Due to a geographical shift in shipbuilding activities, the sector has become very
attractive for India. Indeed, together with shipping and infrastructure, the Indian
government has made shipbuilding a strategic industry with large state-supported
investment programmes for development. This has opened up huge opportunities for
Indian shipyards and both – public and private shipbuilders are taking advantage of
them.
Indian shipbuilding is now emerging as an international competitive, export-led
industry. Additionally it has already gained a strong foothold in the offshore segment.
India also leverages the strengths of its IT industry as it sets up new modern shipyards.
There are 7 government shipyards, 24 private sector shipyards and 34 Indian shipowners.
