Stress Management
What is this life if full of care?
We have no time to stand and stare,
No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows.
Too much to do
and too little time
 I need more time!
 I want to enjoy my life
more. I’m always running
around. I never have time
for myself.
 I have no balance between
my personal life and work.
 Give me a break
This just isn’t life, I’m
stressed out….
Guess what !!! Stress
is predicted to be the
major killer for the
st
21 century : Not
AIDS or CANCER !!

1.
Healthy => fearful of
disease
In 1980….
Ali contracted Pugilistic Parkinsonism,
brought on by repetitive trauma to the
head
At the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta that
saw Ali on hand for the opening
ceremonies…
His hands trembling with palsy from the effects of
Parkinson's disease, Ali took the torch that was relayed
to him from swimmer Janet Evans, lit the Olympic flame
Healthy => fearful of
disease
Following the event
A NEWSPAPER REPORTER…
“Are you still the greatest”
MUHAMMAD ALI
“Yes, I am still the greatest… I am the
greatest fool”
Healthy => fearful of
disease
Example of Mr.Boeing
–
Under his guidance, a tiny airplane
manufacturing company grew into a
huge corporation of related industries
 Owned practically an entire island to
himself
 Suffering due to urinary tract problem
 Constant fear
 When Do I Go To Toilet Next !!!!
High parentage => High
standards
(kule chuti bhayam)

The Great Economic Depression

 With supply exceeding demand, prices
started to fall until deflation took hold of the

l
Honor => Fear Of being
dishonoured (Mane dainya bhayam)
 For one who has been honoured,
– Dishonor is worse than death
 Example of Hitler :

supposed to have committed suicide…
 Example :
– Social Pressure for a 9 pointer who is
writing an exam
• “How much syllabus has my peer covered by now ?”
Beautiful => Fear of
aging factors
1. Example of French Actress Brigette
Bardott
– Went into seclusion when she saw a
wrinkle on her face
2. The whole cosmetic industry
flourishes on this principle
– You wont grow old man !!
Expertise in a field =>
Fear of defeat in debate
This is true not just of the
present but since the
beginning of human existence
Debates have been a prominent
part of the people’s life
Hypocrisy => Fear of
being exposed
The Piltdown Man Fraud
The whole world is hinged on
“COVER-UP ACTIVITY”
What will they say / what will they think
For the embodied =>
Death is greatest fear
1. Death is certain.
As sure as death
2. Death Comes without a call
3. But no one wants to die !!!!!
– Thus there is stress
A PARADOX
Every time one faces stress owing to a
combination of one or more of these
fears….
First you lose your health to gain wealth !!
Then you lose wealth to gain health !!!!
TYPES OF STRESS
 Eustress
– Eustress can be defined as a pleasant or
curative stress. We can't always avoid stress,
in fact, sometimes we don't want to. Often, it is
controlled stress that gives us our edge in
performance related activities
 Distress
– Distress is an unpleasant or disease-producing
stress. Chronic, sustained, uncontrolled stress
of a negative type may lead to a compromised
immune system, illness, and even death.
The Stress Curve diagram
You Can’t Do away With
Stress Factors
 A bit of stress is required though for
performance of one’s activity
 We don’t have control over factors that
produce stress
– Example : We can’t control Market flow/stocks
 There will be rains.
– Can you do away with rains to avoid getting
wet ?
No…
 You Use an umbrella !!!!!
 LESSON :
– If one takes proper precautions, one
will be unaffected despite all stressful
factors !!!
TWO TYPES OF SOLUTIONS
TO
DISTRESS
Symptomatic
Pathological
SYMPTOMATIC
TREATMENT
 You see boils on your friend’s hand Ouch!!
And you pierce them
So You Take to Drugs/smoking to counter
Stress
•First you take a cigarette
•Then the cigarette takes you !!!
PATHOLOGICAL
TREATMENT
 You take him/her to the doctor and
– Get a checkup done
– After a thorough checkup, you take the
prescription which is aimed at the
pathogens which are at the root of your
disease!!!
So, in the domain of Stress Management, you look
at the underlying cause of stress
SOLUTION
 How to put ourselves in a situation where
one is not influenced by factors producing
distress ?
 You are in stress
– You may take to smoking => You are simply
postponing the problem
– You must remove the root cause of stress
ROOT CAUSE OF
STRESS
 Every person has his priority of
attachment. The nine types of fears are
examples of fear produced by such an
attachment
 Attachment is a symptom of the mind…
STRESS IS A PHYSIOLOGICAL
DISTURBANCE CAUSED BY MENTAL
ANXIETIES OF THE NINE KINDS
DISCUSSED EARLIER.
Thus managing
stress has a lot to
do with managing
the
Mind
To manage mind
 There must be proper study of mind,
in the form of a science
 The process must be practical
 Based on such a theory :
– There should be examples of Stress
Management in the past
– There should be living examples of
stress management
BHAGAVAD GITA
A classic for Stress management
Quoted from ….
The Economic Times (February 8)
- S. K. Shelgikar
The best prescription for stress management
and counselling on the spot is in the
Bhagavad-Gita. Arjuna was under tremendous
pressure to win the Mahabharata war, but he
was distressed at the thought of fighting
against his relatives, friends and elders. Great
warrior though he was, he broke down under
the stress, and laying aside his weapons
declared to Krishna, his charioteer, that he
would not fight.
 Lord Sri Krishna helped Arjuna emerge
from the after-effects of stress, by taking
him through the path of sankhya/dhyana
marg, karma marg, bhakti marg, and made
him come to the conclusion,
– "I am now ready to do whatever you say to
fight the great war."
 From this episode of stress management
and counselling session, evolved a
profound theory for the rest of the world
for the rest of the time.
 The prescriptions given by Krishna are
timeless and also applicable to the human
race as a whole, whether in the East or
West, irrespective of sect or stream that
any person follows.
 One who can understand and practice the
code of conduct as outlined in the Gita,
will never require a single lesson of stress
management in his life, even if he is part
of the proverbial rat race in the global
market place.
