POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING MAJOR IN TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING JOHN IVAN P. GUEVARRA INTRODUCTION •Jeepney as an innovative work of Filipino • originally made from US military Jeeps left over from World War II •Jeepney : The Undisputed King of the Road • has the highest mode share of 55% • has 6,952,000 person trips and 938,000vehicle trips (MMUTIS Final Report 1999) • has a total registered number of 534,262 in NCR (DOTC-LTO data 2000) •Jeepney: The “Masa” transport • Intermediate size and capacity compatible to most Metro Manila road network •Ability to provide a door to door service at practically anytime at anyplace • Very affordable Fare • Jeepney: A source of traffic congestion and accidents • Huge number of Jeepney plying through the city streets •drop anywhere on the middle of the road to load and unload • accidents due to driving misconduct Pasig River Ferry : A revival from the past • Magsaysay lines operation during the year 1990-1991 • Starcraft Ferry operation during the year 1996-1997 Present day Pasig River Ferry Service •inaugurated last February 12, 2007 • the longest serving ferry in Pasig river (28 km) • Has 14 stations from Plaza Mexico in Intramuros, Manila to Brgy. Kalawaan Sur, Pasig City Pasig River Ferry Service: A comfortable and affordable mode of transport • Air-conditioned boats and stations • have a maximum seating capacity of 150 people • equipped with video and audio system onboard • contains separate comfort room for male and female • provides discount for student passenger Pasig River Ferry Service : An escape from traffic congestion • Links are less exposed to delays • provides an on-time departure and arrival OBJECTIVES •To determine the Attitude of Jeepney Users to Jeepney Level of Service • To determine operational problems encountered by Jeepney mode users • To determine the preferences of Jeepney Users in case of switching to Pasig River Ferry • To determine and explain factors that influence jeepney user’s mode switching decision to switch to Pasig River ferry. • To generate a model that will represent the mode switching decision of jeepney mode users upon the introduction of Pasig River ferry CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT • Attitude on • Review of Related Literature and Studies • Survey result analysis -percentage -frequency • Household survey by Questionnaire checklist • Disaggregate Modelling - non linear estimation using STATISTICA Jeepney Level of Service • Operational Problems of Jeepney Transport • Jeepney Riders’ Service Preferences •Factors of mode switching behaviour •Mode switching model Feedback Pasig River Ferry Characteristics Mode Switching Behavior (Switch to Pasig River Ferry?) Yes or No Demographic and Socioeconomic Attributes Trip Attributes Jeepney service attributes Mode Preference in terms of quality of service Individual Jeepney rider USEFULL PROPERTIES OF DISAGGREGATE MODELING (SPEARS 1979) •Disaggregate models are based on theories of individual behaviour • These models are probabilistic • The explanatory variables included in the model can have explicitly estimated variables • Given option is a function of their socio-economic characteristics and the relative attractiveness of the option • There are alternatives or option available to the decision-maker • Each option has distinctive attributes wherein cost and benefits can be measured THE STUDY AREA The chosen study area is Brgy. San Joaquin, Pasig City CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING A STUDY AREA • Must be a residential area • Must have Jeepney Operation nearby • A Pasig River Ferry Station must be near the area THE STUDY AREA SAN JOAQUIN FERRY STATION BRGY. SAN JOAQUIN PASIG CITY JEEPNEY OPERATION • A 1 KM Radius was designated to cover the area that will be surveyed THE POPULATION AND THE RESPONDENTS •The population for this study are the residents of Brgy. San Joaquin, Pasig City • has a total household population of 12,498 (2007 NSO data) • Has a total household of 2518 (2007 NSO data) • Sloven’s formula was used to get the total number of respondents and household to be surveyed Sloven’s formula : SS = N 1 + (Ne) Where: N = Total Population e = marginal error = 5% Number of Household NH NH = 2518 1 + ( 2518 x .05 ) NH = 345 RESULTS: •A total of 387 respondents will be use for the study • A total of 345 household will be surveyed • 1-2 household members will be surveyed in each household • only employee or student in the household will be surveyed INSTRUMENTATION •Questionnaire checklist Survey QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN The questionnaire that will be use in the study will be design to consist of Three (3) parts such as: 1.
