
Asbestos Properties/Characteristics



Fibrous mineral incorporated into building
components over the past 100 years;
Has been put into as many as 3,500 different
products, including but not limited to,
fireproofing, plasters, insulation, ceiling tiles,
flooring, caulks, mastics and coatings;
Primary concern to humans is exposure
through the inhalation of airborne fibers.

Introduction/Background



Various types of cancers and diseases have
been associated with asbestos exposure,
including Asbestosis, Mesothelioma and Lung
Cancer;
Asbestos health risks are primarily chronic in
nature;
Cancers and diseases usually associated with
high levels of asbestos exposure.

Friable – Ability of material to crumble or
pulverize under hand pressure when dry.
Key Consideration:

PRESENCE OF ASBESTOS NOT A HAZARD.
ONLY WHEN IT IS DISTURBED AND

(AEC) to perform inspection within Maple
Meadow Complex;
Inspection conducted in late May-Early June
of 2013.

Tenant Responsibilities

Tenants shall not disturb ACM, including
drywall walls and ceilings in any manner.
Includes but is not limited to:


No screws or nails to hang pictures, shelving
or window dressings
If tenant want to hang pictures, they may
use hanging strips that do not penetrate
walls or ceilings (available at AAHC office)

Tenant Responsibilities

Tenants are not allowed to hire, contract
or utilize any outside entity to perform
renovation, modification, repair, alteration
or asbestos drywall joint compound
disturbances without written approval of
the landlord and this approval will be
based upon the acceptance of a written
plan of protection from potential asbestos
disturbance.

Tenant Responsibilities

Any damage to asbestos shall be reported
to the ANN ARBOR HOUSING
COMMISSION office by calling the work
order line at (734) 794-6720.

AAHC Responsibilities



Ensure untrained staff and outside contractors
do not disturb ACM, including drywall walls and
ceilings in any manner.
Only properly trained in-house staff and outside
contractors shall be allowed to disturb ACM
including drywall walls and ceilings
Shall use strict procedures in order to ensure the
protection of human health and the
environment.
