Continental Gateway and Trade Corridor

Current Status

• Canada’s economic heartland has a fully integrated transportation system, providing a net competitive advantage for Canada-U.S. and international trade  But congestion, capacity and efficiency issues will limit future growth

Key Priorities/Issues

• Construction of the new Detroit River International Crossing • Ongoing discussions and collaboration with key stakeholders to identify needs, freight transportation impediments and develop potential solutions:

Position the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Maritime Corridor for the future Optimize Metropolitan International Goods Movement in Greater Montreal and Greater Toronto Explore options on integration of all modes in the supply chain

Key Current Files

• Detroit River International Crossing – On June 25, 2012, Prime Minister and Michigan Governor announced agreement to build new publicly-owned bridge crossing between Windsor and Detroit. • Ballast Water – Compatible rules are needed to support trade, both regionally and internationally. Our two countries must work together towards non-discriminatory requirements that are actionable, practicable and protective. • National Long-Term Infrastructure Plan – Government of Canada launched process / consultations to develop new long term infrastructure plan beyond 2014 expiry of Building Canada Plan. 11
