A word about popular SPs in production
federations
We have already learned that there is NO SINGLE KILLER SP
Recently started the initiative to gather the list of most popular SPs in
production federations
Work still in progress – so far received 8 answers
Some statistics/reports are publicly available:

A word about popular SPs in production
federations
Statistics are made a bit differently based on the architecure of
federation
Central and hub-and-spoke federation catch all logins
Full mesh – either are gathering central statistics, or are collecting
the statistics from the central discovery service
Far most usage have the local institution services such as local portals,
virtual learning environments, intranets
Besides that, the sceen is colorfull
Elearning portals
Collaboration tools
Journals and books publishers, library portals
Various services such as timetables, software licences, sports

eLearning in broad sence is using ICT techhnoligies in education
Learning Management System - LMS is software for organizing
eLearning education and courses
One of the most popular SPs in federations
Usualy universites deploy an elearning platform for the whole university

Filesender
Open source tool for sharing large files
Developed in the NREN community: AARNet (Australia), HEAnet
(Ireland), SURFnet (The Netherlands) and UNINETT (Norway)
Authenticated user sends the file by upolading it to the filesender.
Recipient gets email with URL on filesender where to collect the file.
Maximum size of the file and timelimit for availability of the file are
configurable by the filesender system administrator
Not used as reliable filestorage!

Web conference tools enable users to participate in video conferences
from their laptop, requering only broswer, camera and headset
Very convinient for organizig meetings, webinars, lectures

Web conference – BigBlueButton + Mconf
Mconf is an open source multiconference system that you can use for
free (at mconf.org).
It is developed in the research group PRAV at UFRGS (Brazil), and
funded by Brazilian NREN RNP
It is composed of four main entities:
web portal that provides access to web conferences, shared
documents, spaces and more;
a load balancer that allows the system to scale to thousands of
users;
a web conference system powered by BigBlueButton ™
a mobile web conference client.

Okeanos - Cyclades

okeanos global is developed and provided by Greek NREN GRNET
okeanos global provides easy creation of Virtual Machines from web
browser – up to 2 VMs, available for 6 months
Different Operating Systems - Windows, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Debian,
CentOS, Fedora and FreeBSD.
Up to 4 CPUs, 4GB RAM and 80GB of system disk for each user.
All VMs connected to the public Internet upon boot.
Create an isolated private network and connect VMs to them.
Custom Images - create, upload, register and then spawn VMs
from custom Images

Pithos+ is the Virtual Storage service of ~okeanos global
Enables user to store files online, share them with friends and access
them anytime through web, client or virtual machines:
50 GBs of online storage
share files and content with other Pithos+ users or friends
Simple and intuitive Web UI to upload and organize files
Pithos+ clients to sync local folders with Pithos+
Windows, ipad, macos, iphone client applications

Community section fosters discussions
PLM - Product Management Portal
All NREN GEANT participants and NREN staff have acces via their IdP
NREN staff which are not participants have only read permisiona and
write permision in Community section
GEANT participants whic are not from NREN also can acess via their
IdP, thus enabling all other users of that IdP to have read rights

SUNET Adobe Connect
Adobe® Connect™ is a web-based collaboration tool for participating in
and hosting virtual meetings.
Sweden NREN conctracted the Adobe Connect for whole NREN
eduGAIN users can autheticate and participate at meetings. Can get
higher priviledges in specific rooms.
