Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC)
HMSC is a leading marine laboratory distinguished by its collaborative research partnerships. Originally established as a
marine laboratory for Oregon State University, HMSC currently hosts collaborative research and education programs from
seven OSU colleges and six state and federal agencies on HMSC’s 49-acre campus.
As OSU’s coastal campus and a base for oceanographic research, HMSC excels in student
research opportunities and experiential instruction. We host a thriving summer internship
programs and offer a diversity of academic programs for students from community college
through post-doc. Managed by Oregon Sea Grant, HMSC's Visitor Center is a key site for public
and K-12 education, and serves as a social laboratory for OSU’s Free-Choice Learning Lab.
HMSC is a resource for Visiting Scientists and Marine Science Students, combining expertise,
location and infrastructure, including a world-class seawater system, experimental wet labs,
and OSU’s Guin Library.

Fisheries & Wildlife Fall Program
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife offers a variety of courses relating to coastal ecology and the management of natural
resources. Our program is designed to provide a diverse array of hands-on educational experiences as well as traditional
classroom instruction.
The Fall program includes a field-oriented course in Coastal Ecology and Resource Management (CERM) FW 426/526. This fivecredit course is taught by a team of faculty and agency scientists and is based at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, on the
coast in Newport, Oregon. The class consists of a one-week intensive field lab and lecture series, followed by weekly
seminars, discussions, and field trips for the term. Students learn basic biological, chemical, and physical processes of coastal
habitats, and some of the issues associated with human use of coastal resources. The course is open to advanced
undergraduates and graduate students from any department but is of particular interest to those majoring in Fisheries and
Wildlife, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resources.

hatchery fish, in order to better manage those differences

forests, streams, and watersheds and foster collaboration among ecosystem science,
education, natural resource management, and the humanities

and Hemlock and Douglas Fir forests; steep terrain with fast flowing cold water streams)
