Junior Great
Books
and Daily 5
Claudia Burke and
Shannon Wilson
What is Junior Great Books?
A
program designed around engaging
literature that focuses on extending
student thinking
Students are encouraged to form and
respond to interpretive questions
The instruction for each text culminates
with a Shared Inquiry Discussion
JGB: What is Shared Inquiry?
After
multiple readings of the text and a
variety of instructional activities, students
come together to explore the meaning of
the piece of literature.
They share their insights (rooted in textual
evidence) and respond to each others’
ideas.
What is Daily 5?
A
structure that helps students develop
reading, writing, and vocabulary
independently.
Focuses on choices and student direction.
Enables the teacher to work effectively
with small groups while other students
work on meaningful tasks.
How do JGB and Daily 5 fit
together?
Both
of these instructional designs
encourage student independence and
student “choice.”
JGB teacher editions include aspects
which fit with Daily 5:
Vocabulary instruction (Word Work)
Writing extensions (Work on Writing)
Directed Notes (Read to Someone or Self)
